Dale Not long after Dr. Dale's death, a warm friend and former parishioner of his, with the sanction of the family of the de ceased, requested the writer to prepare a suitable Memorial of his life and labors. Only vaguely aware of the difficulties involved in such an undertaking and prompted by a strong personal attach ment, and deep appreciation of the sterling qualities of the man of God, so lately caught up from among us, he was led, at once, though not without misgivings as to his fitness, to accept the task thus imposed. In the prosecution of the work, the conspicu ous absence of such material as usually falls into the hands of a biographer soon became apparent. Marked and influential as the life had been, the written records from which to construct an adequate Memorial are almost wholly lacking. No diary was kept. N o memoranda of personal experience remained. Only occa sional dates of events, and a few letters to his family and friends, had been casually preserved. Dr. Dale was a very reticent man and seldom spoke of himself or his personal affairs except to his most intimate friends, and even to them with a lingering flavor of reserve. For instance, he carried on his remarkable researches on the subject of Baptism, by day and by night, for twenty long years, without ever saying to a human being that he was making a book, until he had gone over the whole ground of the Inquiry, and his first volume was ready for the press. Excerpt from Memorial Services of the Rev. James Floy, D. D., Held at the Seventh St. M. E. Church, N. Y., November 16, 1863 Rev. James Floy, D. D., died at his residence in New York City, October 14th, 1863; and funeral services were held on the subsequent Saturday, at the Chapel of the M. E. Church on Beekman Hill. The death of Dr. Floy produced a profound impression upon the mind and heart of the Church, and at a large meeting of the ministers of New York and vicinity, held at the Mission Rooms, it was resolved to hold a public commemorative service. A Committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements for such a service, consisting of the Rev. Dr. Whedon, Rev. E. E. Griswold, Rev. Dr. True, Rev. Seymour Landon, and Rev. G. W. Woodruff. Under the direction of this Committee the Memorial Meeting was called on Monday evening, November 16th, at the 7th Street M. E. Church, and was very largely attended by the leading ministers and members of the Church in the City and neighborhood. The Presiding Elder of the New York District, Rev. E. E. Griswold, presided; and the religious exercises were conducted by the pastor of the Church, Rev. Mr. Bottome.
