Book Description
Describes the character types of a number of men who compete for the love of one woman. One of her primary admirers is a scientist, and a major theme is the tension between the administration of reason-based science and human emotional life. Pidmohylny, a member of the literary group "The Link," wrote short stories and novels on existentialist themes. His last novel, A Little Touch of Drama, published in 1930, shows the influence of French writers such as Guy de Maupassant. In his earlier works he experimented with impressionistic psychological stories and with literary expressionism. Although he was not politically involved, he was arrested and eventually perished in a concentration camp.

But instead of being taken to his usual suite, he is led to an attic room with a window the size of a chessboard. Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. While Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval, the Count, stripped of the trappings that defined his life, is forced to question what makes us who we are.
