Book Description
Excerpt from A Hymn of the Cross To that lovely chasm, in the early centuries, when the ascetic life began to lay its spell upon de vont minds, men travelled out of all Christendom. They longed to escape fromaturbulent and tempt ing world. They were eager to live and to die in the land of our Lord. They lodged in the cavesin the cliff-side, each one shut up in his own hermit cell. In the year 520 there came St. Sabas to spend his years in watching and prayer. He won the reverence of the scattered hermit folk who lived in the caves, and gathered them into a commun ity. They built their eyrie-like nest, where it Still Stands, and it soon became one of the mos't famous in the eas'tern Church. Ever since, the monks of Marsaba keep their vigils, and observe the customs of their monotonous days, in the monastery in the gorge of the Kedron. Book Description
Excerpt from A Hymn of the Cross "Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." – John vi. 37. One of the names endeared to Christian hearts in that of the Brook of Kedron. It flows softly, a little quiet stream, under the eastern wall of Jerusalem. When swollen with flood from the uplands of Judea it rushes down through many a gorge and chasm to join the Jordan. Book Description
Excerpt from Songs of the Cross: For the Sabbath-School IT has been with pleasure that the author has noted the call of the Sabbath-schools of the land for purer and more thoughtful hymns and for more solid and wearing music than have been given them in many of the Sabbath-school singing-books of the period. In preparing Songs of the Cross, he has endeavored to meet this call, and has spared no labor, trouble, or expense, to attain this desirable end. He has not forgotten that, while appropriate music very much deepens, yet the real impression upon the hearts and minds of the. Singers is made by the hymn, hence his constant endeavor has been to secure and use only such hymns as express some gospel truth or some pure emotion of the heart. While he has not completely realized his ideal, he yet believes that it has gone very far m that direction. Something will be found for every occasion of interest. Christmas, New Years, Anniversary, Concerts, Funerals, Missionary Meetings, Temperance Meetings, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Cross O christ, who died for men, who died for me, I fall before thy feet, ' and cannot see Aught else beside my grievous sins and thee. How great my work of evil, thou dost know, Thou who for me didst grieve and suffer so, Thou who for me upon the cross didst go. Whatever thing I see, or hear, or speak, My sin is still before me Lord most meek, Thy strong and gracious help alone I seek. That help can put my guilt forever by, And make me strong when sin again is nigh Forgiving Saviour, give it or I die! Book Description
Excerpt from The Triumph of the Cross Every syllable of this profession of Savonarola's faith in the supremacy of the successor is expunged There are no asterisks to show that words are left out. There is no footnote, no word in the Preface, to explain the uh pardonable liberty of the translator. A comma is put after the words loosed in heaven, and the translator continues, - as though this were the author's continua tion, -from which we may see that Jesus Christ, down to the words He shall sit and rule upon the throne of David, etc The entire passage about the successor of St. Peter, Hence it follows, is summarily omitted from what purports to be a translation.
