Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Chile Two periods of Chileanihistory have already been well presented to the outside world: the period of the revolution and that of the late war between Chile and the peruvian-bolivian alliance. Respecting the period between the years 1829 and 1879 there is no connected account in English. Since the war with Peru, Chile has attracted considerable outside attention, and with in the past two years there have been several graphic accounts of modern Chile. What is now needed is a volume that will condense the information, which in English is scattered through many books, and give a complete, short history and picture of Chile in a sin gle volume; that I undertake to furnish in this work. Book Description
Excerpt from The Independence of Chile The history of human progress cannot furnish a more interesting spectacle than to see arise, from the decay and degeneration of despotism and selfishness, the white flower of freedom; to see justice issue from corruption, equality from degradation, contentment and prosperity from oppression and neglect. Nowhere in the chronicle of nations is this contrast more strikingly represented than in the story of Chile, the roots of whose independence are to be sought in the conditions that Spain imposed upon the colony during the period of her supremacy. These formed a comprehensive code of enactments whose only purpose was to augment the ever-increasing torrent of revenue that poured its golden flood of opulence into the royal coffers of Spain. These statutes were not infrequently suggested by Spanish Colonial officers, eager for the reward of royal commendation, and were therefore often prompted by local and particular requirements which modified, without superseding, previous decrees. None indeed, or very few, was ever rescinded, but new were added to old until after two centuries, Colonial law was become a maze and an enigma. Book Description
Excerpt from The Republic of Chile: The Growth, Resources, and Industrial Conditions of a Great Nation The present'work has been written from'the standpoint of one Who was permitted to see and study the social life and character of the people, not as an outsider, but as a friend, and l have endeavored to show no partiality in the treatment of my subject. It has been my main object to give a fair and adequate idea of the'e'xisting conditions and future outlook of the Republic of Chile. I have felt constant regret that in giving more particular attention to the modern history, I have been obliged to pass over with only a brief summary the annals of the nation's glorious past, full of records of bravery and incidents of patriotic pride, which it is impossible to read without enthusiastic admiration. The same charac teristics which have made the Chilean people strong in the defence of national rights have given them the energy and-enterprising Spirit necessary to achieve commercial and industrial supremacy, and there is no country of South America in which general progress has been more substantial and continued and foreign relations more satisfactorily maintained. Ln intellectual culture the Chileans have established their place among the more advanced nations, and their scientists, painters, and sculptors have won fame in the highest circles of Europe and America. Book Description
Excerpt from The Chilean Revolution of 1891 The lack of vessels for the transportation of tr00ps was sorely felt by the Government, and at the conclusion of the war negotiations had been completed looking to the purchase of one or more steamers for this pur pose.
