To a former collection, "In Cap and Bells," I appended a few memorial verses, by right of the fool's prerogative of being serious at times; so here, to this "harvest of chaff," I have added a few grains of memory's garnering. Under this image there is no implication that these lines, prompted by solemn occasion, are to be counted as good grain; simply I want to make apology for their inclusion in a book with so vacant a title.
