Book Description
Excerpt from A Gardener's Year Many a book have I sat down to commence, all of them with a humble heart, but none that I can remember in quite such earnest fear and trembling as this gardener's diary for the year 1903. For more seasons than I care to count I have been a gardener in sundry lands, following that most ancient craft with a single mind, and not, I hope, Without learning some of its mysteries. And yet how much remains to learn, more than ever can be learned by me. My case is not singular, however, and herein lies consolation; at least never yet have I met the man or woman who knew everything about gardening, least of all among those who follow it by profession. These for the most part are good flower-men, or good vegetable-men, or they understand Grapes, or can grow Violets - but fail with Roses and other things. Or per chance, but this is rare, though many there be who swear it, Orchids are their forte. (here I may say at once, speaking as a modest amateur of these last-named lovely plants, rather would I hire a man who had never seen one of them. Of course there are many exceptions, still every grower should pray to be delivered from the new head who understands Orchids. Better far take a novice who is Willing to learn, and train him.) Book Description
Karel Capek's The Gardener's Year is a timeless classic of wit and wisdom, sure to capture the heart and imagination of every gardener--indeed, everyone who has pursued any hobby with a passion that occasionally overrides good common sense. Originally published more that fifty years ago in Czechoslovakia, it transcends the years with grace and ease. Whether Capek is talking about the lack or surfeit of rain, the fruitless search for space to plant just a few more perennials, or the unfathomable mystery of the green thumb, his words strike chord upon chord within every gardener, in every time and place. Fifty-eight sprightly drawings by Karel Capek's brother Josef Capek, lend themselves perfectly to the artful simplicity and humour of this book. Through the year, Capek does battle with the garden hose, learns the value of patience in spring, prays to the Lord for rain (but only on certain parts of the garden, please), buys far too many plants at every opportunity, curses raspberry canes that invade from his neighbor's garden, routs stones from the soil (they seem to grow from spores), and agonizes continually about the garden while he is on vacation in August. In short, Karel Capek is a gardener, timeless, with all the frailties, hope, and boundless optimism necessarily shared by all gardeners. After the sun sets, he leans on his spade and sighs with deep content: "I have sweated today!"

Book Description
Russell Page, one of the legendary gardeners and landscapers of the twentieth century, designed gardens great and small for clients throughout the world. His memoirs, born of a lifetime of sketching, designing, and working on site, are a mixture of engaging personal reminiscence, keen critical intelligence, and practical know-how. They are not only essential reading for today’s gardeners, but a master’s compelling reflection on the deep sources and informing principles of his art. The Education of a Gardener offers charming, sometimes pointed anecdotes about patrons, colleagues, and, of course, gardens, together with lucid advice for the gardener. Page discusses how to plan a garden that draws on the energies of the surrounding landscape, determine which plants will do best in which setting, plant for the seasons, handle color, and combine trees, shrubs, and water features to rich and enduring effect. To read The Education of a Gardener is to wander happily through a variety of gardens in the company of a wise, witty, and knowledgeable friend. It will provide pleasure and insight not only to the dedicated gardener, but to anyone with an interest in abiding questions of design and aesthetics, or who simply enjoys an unusually well-written and thoughtful book.

Book Description
Excerpt from Making a Garden to Bloom This Year The design to be employed for a garden planned for only one season is not so vital as the design which permanent planting de mands; nevertheless, it should be as good as it can be, under the limitations which the character Of the soil may impose, or which are imposed by unalterable condi tions. I speak of the soil conditions sep arately, for ordinary soil is alterable, up to a certain point, even within the limits of a single summer; but there are condi tions which may not be changed within so short a space of time - conditions of shade sometimes, or moisture, or dryness - and there are some imposed by absolutely unalterable physical peculiarities. The garden design, as well as the selection of the plants, must, therefore, conform to these, for even annuals have their prefer ences, which are worth considering and conceding.
