Book Description
Greece Reinvented discusses the transformation of Byzantine Hellenism as the cultural elite of Byzantium, displaced to Italy, constructed it. It explores why and how Byzantine migrants such as Cardinal Bessarion, Ianus Lascaris, and Giovanni Gemisto adopted Greek personas to replace traditional Byzantine claims to the heirship of ancient Rome. In Greece Reinvented, Han Lamers shows that being Greek in the diaspora was both blessing and burden, and explores how these migrants’ newfound ‘Greekness’ enabled them to create distinctive positions for themselves while promoting group cohesion. These Greek personas reflected Latin understandings of who the Greeks ‘really’ were but sometimes also undermined Western paradigms. Greece Reinvented reveals some of the cultural tensions that bubble under the surface of the much-studied transmission of Greek learning from Byzantium to Italy.

Book Description
In its third edition, this catalogue covers a period of more than 300 years of printed European cartography concerning Greece. With nearly 4,000 maps listed alphabetically by the makers names and 500 black-and-white illustrations, this is the most inclusive cartographical bibliography produced about Greece from the period of 1477 to 1800.Maps are listed in alphabetical order under the name of the particular cartiographer, publisher, and engraver. Variant maps also show some of the inaccuracies of the time including the Ptolemaic style of cartography for Greece. An area of special attention is the Eastern Mediterranean basin, which has been the center of the civilized European world for many centuries. The cartographic descriptions of the region were especially necessary during ancient times, and relevant maps of the area were followed up and developed by the efficient Byzantine administration. Such rich material was later used by European cartographers of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.Like any other scientific and artistic activity of the period under review, cartography was influenced by the intense interest in Greece and enhanced by the revival of Greek culture and the flourishing of classical studies during and after the Renaissance.

Book Description
A collection of 12 essays that explore the identity of Ancient Greece as a nation of very different communities. The volume begins with a study of the continuity of Greek culture and society as shown by the ease with which Greeks identified their local deities with those in Hesiod and Homer. Other topics include: the relationship between population size and political strength in the Arkadian Poleis; the reasons for the shifting location of the city of Miletos; whether Ancient Sparta was a Polis; the political organisation of East Locris in the Classical period; the Chalcidic Peninsula and Thrace; the use of the word `Polis' in the works of Xenophon, historians, Attic orators, inscriptions and in other Archaic and Classical sources. This useful history concludes with an index of literary sources, inscriptions and names.

Book Description
This lavishly illustrated book is the first systematic exploration of cartographic cartouches, the decorated frames that surround the title, or other text or imagery, on historic maps. It addresses the history of their development, the sources cartographers used in creating them, and the political, economic, historical, and philosophical messages their symbols convey. Cartouches are the most visually appealing parts of maps, and also spaces where the cartographer uses decoration to express his or her interests—so they are key to interpreting maps. The book discusses thirty-three cartouches in detail, which range from 1569 to 1821, and were chosen for the richness of their imagery. The book will open your eyes to a new way of looking at maps.
