Book Description
Excerpt from A Bibliography of the Writings of Jonathan Swift The revisions and additions which Dr. Teerink has made in the present work are as follows: (1) He has provided full physical de scriptions for all important books and pamphlets. (2) He has brought the work up to date by including the bibliographical find ings of Swift scholarship during the past twenty-five years and by listing books and pamphlets which he had not seen or known about in 1937. (3) He has removed a considerable number of pieces attributed to Swift, either by dropping them or by relegating them to the section entitled Doubtful. (4) He has detached books or pamphlets containing several pieces from Collected Works and placed them in other sections. (5) He has transferred entries of works containing some contemporary comment on a work by Swift from the end of the book to where the work by Swift has been entered. These are indeed substantial contributions and would seem to justify a second verdict from Prince Posterity. A statement needs to be made concerning the nature and extent of the editorial work done by Professor Scouten. He has verified all of the physical descriptions of the books and pamphlets that were contained in the Teerink Collection, now in the Library of the University of Pennsylvania, and has made minor reforms in using bibliographical symbols where Dr. Teerink gave a lengthier verbal account. In order to hold the work to one volume, he has arbitrarily cut off all entries after Sir Walter Scott's edition of 1814 (except under Biography and Criticism, where the entries extended to He has completed the replacement of contemporary criticism begun by Dr. Teerink. He has assigned numbers to new entries established by Dr. Teerink, has provided a table showing the location of all entries, and has made an index. He has silently omitted entries of some works not belonging in the Swift canon, particularly the John Bull pamphlets. In only one place has he re vised any entries; in the light of new information, he has rearranged those for Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift. Book Description
Excerpt from Jonathan Swift: A Biographical and Critical Study I hold no brief for Swift, but I have endeavoured to do him justice where justice has been either with held or too grudgingly allowed. I have endeavoured to vindicate the consistency of his political principles, his character in all that related to practice and duty as a churchman, the purity of his motives as well as his wisdom as an Irish Agitator, and his conduct with regard to Stella-and Vanessa. Book Description
Excerpt from Swift The chief materials for a life of Swift are to be found in his writings and correspondence. The best edition is the second of the two edited by Scott (1814 and 1824). In 1751 Lord Orrery published Remarks upon the Life and Writings of Dr. Jonathan Swift. Orrery, born 1707, had known Swift from about 1732. His remarks give the views of a person of quality of more ambition than capacity, and more anxious to exhibit his own taste than to give full or accurate information. In 1754 Dr. Delany published Observations upon Lord Orrery's Remarks, intended to vindicate Swift against some of Orrery's severe judgments. Delany, born about 1685, became intimate with Swift soon after the Dean's final settlement in Ireland. He was then one of the authorities of Trinity College, Dublin. He is the best contemporary authority, so far as he goes. In 1756 Deane Swift, grandson of Swift's uncle Godwin, and son-in-law to Swift's cousin and faithful guardian, Mrs. Whiteway, published an Essay upon the Life, Writings, and Character of Dr. Jonathan Swift, in which he attacks both his predecessors. Deane Swift, born about 1708, had seen little or nothing of his cousin till the year 1738, when the Dean's faculties were decaying. Book Description
Excerpt from Jonathan Swift: The Leslie Stephen Lecture, Delivered Before the University of Cambridge, on 26 May 1917 Hen the University of Cambridge honoured me by inviting me to de liver the Leslie Stephen lecture, I thought I was in duty bound to go to the I 8th cen tury for my subject. For Leslie Stephen has made the 18th century his own by right of conquest. Nor was I deterred from choosing to speak of Jonathan Swift by the reflection, that I should take aview of him and his writings, which was not the aview of Leslie Stephen, whom this lecture commemorates. If controversy be the athletics of literature, as I think it is, then Leslie Stephen was not of those who would have resented disagreement. For he was an athlete always - ou the run ning path, on the High Alps, and in his study. Thus was I guided in the choice of my subject. Book Description
The book's focus is the major satires upon which Swift's literary reputation principally rest including 'A Tale of Tub', 'An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity', 'Gulliver's Travels', 'A Modest Proposal' and more. This critical analysis highlights the extremism of Swiftian satire and its off page menaces.
