Book Description
This classic introduction to the Chinese literature is a fundamental step towards the West's understanding of the rich literary legacy of China. Readable, condensed, entertaining, the selections contained in this book belong to enduring world literature; the "Great Society" envisioned by Confucius; the "Fireside Chats" of K'ang Hei; the supercilious letter of the Emperor Ch'ien Lung to King George of England; the "Memorial: on the Bone of Buddha”; the imaginative lines of the poets. The wit and wisdom of China dispel time and distance and bring East and West together as the heart and soul of a great people is revealed in their stories, anecdotes, essays, and poems. Here is a close-up view of the educational system, home life, and government of old China as found in their own writings, with personal glimpses of some of the great--the emperors bathing in their crystal pools, of Lao Tzu in his library, and Confucius in his fur-lined underwear.

Book Description
British National Health Service employee Phyllis Dorothy James White (1920-2014) reinvented herself at age 38 as P.D. James, crime novelist. She then became long known as England's "Queen of Crime." Sixteen of her 20 novels feature one or both of her series detectives, Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard and private eye Cordelia Gray. Stand-alone works include the dystopian The Children of Men (1992) and Death Comes to Pemberley (2011), a sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. James's careful plotting has earned comparison with Golden Age British detective writers such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. Yet James's work is thoroughly modern, with realistic descriptions of police procedures and the echoes and aftereffects of crime. This literary companion includes more than 700 encyclopedic entries covering the characters, settings and themes of her published writing, along with a career chronology, chronological and alphabetical listings of her works, and an exhaustive index.

Book Description
Marie de France’s beautiful poems of courtly love, enchantment, and mystery are now available in a Norton Critical Edition. Winner of the 2016 Northern California Book Award for Translation of Poetry. Honorable Mention for the 2015 Modern Language Association's Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize For Translation of a Literary Work. Marie de France was a medieval poet who was probably born in France and who lived in England during the twelfth century. Prominent among the earliest poets writing in the French vernacular, Marie de France helped shape the style and genres of later medieval poetry. This Norton Critical Edition includes all of Marie’s lais (short narrative verse poems); selected fables; and a generous excerpt from Saint Patrick’s Purgatory, a long poem based on a well-known medieval legend. Each text is accompanied by detailed explanatory annotations. For comparative reading, two lais, “Bisclavret” and “Yönec,” are accompanied by Marie’s facing-page originals. "Backgrounds and Contexts" is thematically organized to provide readers with a clear sense of Marie’s inspirations. Topics include “The Supernatural,” “Love and Romance,” “Medical Traditions,” “Fable Sources and Analogues: Similar Themes,” and “Purgatory and the Afterlife.” Ovid, Chaucer, Andreas Capellanus, Boccaccio, Aristotle, and Bede are among the authors included. From the wealth of scholarly work published on Marie de France, Dorothy Gilbert has chosen excerpts from nine pieces that address issues of history and authorship as well as major themes in the lais, fables, and Saint Patrick’s Purgatory. The contributors are Thomas Warton, Abbé Gervais de la Rue, Joseph Bedier, Leo Spitzer, R. Howard Bloch, E. A. Francis, Jill Mann, and Jacques Le Goff. A selected bibliography is also included.

Book Description
Published in 1943 amidst the distractions of World War II, Religion of Tomorrow never received the proper recognition it deserved. Now some eighty years later, poet-philosopher John Elof Boodin’s manifesto for a popular Christian renaissance is more necessary than ever. With an informative historical/biographical introduction and more than one hundred textual notes, editor Michael A. Flannery presents Boodin’s spiritual roadmap for a new audience to listen and follow the divine lure towards greater creativity and fulfillment—to “learn by living.” Boodin invites readers to embark upon their own Christian journeys with the poets and sages of the ages at their side. Here Boodin becomes the informed travel guide—well-equipped with the knowledge of history, the tools of science, the sensibilities of a poet, and the empathy of a fellow traveler to be encouraged as was Joshua to “be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
