Book Description
The insect pest invasions in forest plantations were significantly increased in the latest decades. The forestry genera most planted for commercial purposes in the world are Eucalyptus, Pinus, Populus, Acacia, Toona, among others. In South America species of Populus and Salix are secondary in importance to industry but are commonly used as urban trees. The leaf beetles of the Chrysomelidae family are the main insect pest affecting poplar plantations in North America, especially of the genus Chrysomela, where Chrysomela scripta is consider the most harmful species. C. scripta is endemic of North America, being more abundant in poplars plantations in the United States. The aim of this work was report for the first time the presence of C. scripta in Brazil. In July, 2016 some beetles unidentified were observed feeding in trees of Salix nigra and Populus deltoides in an urban area of Botucatu municipality in Su00e3o Paulo State, Brazil, causing complete defoliation. In June 2017 were observed in Piracicaba. Adults, larvae, pupae and eggs were collected and reared in laboratory. These specimens were identified as the exotic species Chrysomela scripta (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). This is the first detection of this exotic pest outside their natural range is important for the development of the sanitary surveillance strategies to prevent the expansion of this species and evaluate their impact in Salix humboldtiana, a native species. Studies to determine the bioecology and distribution of C. scripta in Brazil are ongoing.

Book Description
RECENT ADVANCES IN POLYPHENOL RESEARCH Plant polyphenols are secondary metabolites that constitute one of the most common and widespread groups of natural products. They are essential plant components for adaptation to the environment and possess a large and diverse range of biological functions that provide many benefits to both plants and humans. Polyphenols, from their structurally simplest forms to their oligo/polymeric versions (i.e. tannin and lignin), are phytoestrogens, plant pigments, antioxidants, and structural components of the plant cell wall. The interaction between tannins and proteins is involved in plant defense against predation, cause astringency in foods and beverages, and affect the nutritional and health properties of human and animal food plants. This seventh volume of the highly regarded Recent Advances in Polyphenol Research series is edited by Jess Dreher Reed, Victor Armando Pereira de Freitas, and Stéphane Quideau, and brings together chapters written by some of the leading experts working in the polyphenol sciences today. Topics covered include: Chemistry and physicochemistry Biosynthesis, genetics and metabolic engineering Roles in plants and ecosystems Food, nutrition and health Applied polyphenols Distilling the most recent and illuminating data available, this new volume is an invaluable resource for chemists, biochemists, plant scientists, pharmacognosists and pharmacologists, biologists, ecologists, food scientists and nutritionists.

Book Description
"Half of all insect species are dependent on living plant tissues, consuming about 10% of plant annual production in natural habitats and an even greater percentage in agricultural systems, despite sophisticated control measures. Plants are generally remarkably well-protected against insect attack, with the result that most insects are highly specialized feeders. The mechanisms underlying plant resistance to invading herbivores on the one side, and insect food specialization on the other, are the main subjects of this book. For insects these include food-plant selection and the complex sensory processes involved, with their implications for learning and nutritional physiology, as well as the endocrinological aspects of life cycle synchronization with host plant phenology. In the case of plants exposed to insect herbivores, they include the activation of defence systems in order to minimize damage, as well as the emission of chemical signals that may attract natural enemies of the invading herbivores and may be exploited by neighbouring plants that mount defences as well." "Insect-Plant Biology discusses the operation of these mechanisms at the molecular and organismal levels, in the context of both ecological interactions and evolutionary relationships. In doing so, it uncovers the highly intricate antagonistic and mutualistic interactions that have evolved between plants and insects. The book concludes with a chapter on the application of our knowledge of insect-plant interactions to agricultural production." "This multidisciplinary approach will appeal to students in agricultural entomology, plant sciences, ecology, and indeed anyone interested in the principles underlying the relationships between the two largest groups of organisms on earth: plants and insects."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
