C. 694 658 620 Gyges, Ardys, Sadyattes. 682 647 610 The former, perhaps, would meet the requirement of the annals of Asurbanipal; but if Diodorus be correct in stating 2 years of anarchy, and then 15 of dodecarchy, and the annals will allow the supposition that the Assyrian king speaks of an event so late as his 22nd year, we must prefer the latter. The 2 years then may represent the time spent by Asurahidin in the conquest of Egypt, B. C. 671 to 669; the 15 the whole term of the reign of the tributary kings, subjects of, or rebels against, the power of Assyria by turns, until B. C. 654. This number 15 (6 years of Tabarka and 9 of Psametik), will allow us to account for Eusebius giving 20 years to Taharka, instead of 26, and to Psametik 45 instead of 54; and the number 2 may even account also for Africanus' 18 years for Taharka. I think, then, we may trust this statement of Diodorus, and suppose that Psametik counted the years of his reign from B. C. 663, when Taharka as well as his father died, and that be achieved the independence of Egypt in B. C. 654. Nekau 1 seems to have inherited his throne by direct succession from a line of Saite kings, so that perhaps he was the only one of the 20 who was not actually raized to the throne by Asurahidin, whose invasion of Egypt was directed against the power of Taharka. I take this opportunity of calling attention to a fact, which, as far as I know has escaped the notice of all who have studied the topographical nomenclature of Egypt.
