Book Description
Maxfield Parrish enjoyed tremendous popularity throughout the early decades of the twentieth century. Bruce Watson, writing in Smithsonian magazine, deemed Parrish the "comman man's Rembrandt." It's said that during the Depression, a Parrish illustration was displayed on the walls of one out of every four American homes. The artist's romantic, richly colored images of winsome maidens and faraway places continue to appeal to modern audiences. Selected from hundreds of the artist's images for books, magazines, and calendars, this original collection spotlights Parrish's work from 1897 through the 1920s. Illustrations include art from publications such as Century Magazine, Collier's, and Scribner's. Numerous advertisements include the famed Edison-Mazda Lamp series, along with ads for Jell-O, Ferry's Seeds, and Swift's Premium Ham. A wide selection of book illustrations comprises scenes from The Arabian Nights, Eugene Field's Poems of Childhood, Louise Saunders' The Knave of Hearts, Nathaniel Hawthorne's Tanglewood Tales, and other treasured works

Book Description
The Re-Enchantment of the World is an interdisciplinary volume that challenges the long-prevailing view of modernity as "disenchanted." There is of course something to the widespread idea, so memorably put into words by Max Weber, that modernity is characterized by the "progressive disenchantment of the world." Yet what is less often recognized is the fact that a powerful counter-tendency runs alongside this one, an overwhelming urge to fill the vacuum left by departed convictions, and to do so without invoking superseded belief systems. In fact, modernity produces an array of strategies for re-enchantment, each fully compatible with secular rationality. It has to, because God has many "aspects"--or to put it in more secular terms, because traditional religion offers so much in so many domains. From one thinker to the next, the question of just what, in religious enchantment, needs to be replaced in a secular world receives an entirely different answer. Now, for the first time, many of these strategies are laid out in a single volume, with contributions by specialists in literature, history, and philosophy.

Book Description
Volume XV of the Canadian Centenary Series Now available as e-books for the first time, the Canadian Centenary Series is a comprehensive nineteen-volume history of the peoples and lands which form Canada. Although the series is designed as a unified whole so that no part of the story is left untold, each volume is complete in itself. Incorporating the research of a new generation of Canadian historians, John Herd Thompson and Allen Seager give broader dimensions to our picture of Canada during the inter-war years. Mackenzie King, J.S. Woodsworth, and R.B. Bennett come to life in their pages, but so too do provincial leaders like E.N. Rhodes, T.D. Pattullo, and Maurice Duplessis. Canada, 1922-1939 is also a story of ordinary Canadians, the men, women, and children for whom the 1920s didn’t “roar” and who bore the brunt of the Great Depression. Laurier’s boast that the twentieth century would belong to Canada became a bitter irony during the decades of discord bracketed by two world wars. Apart from the boom of the late twenties, economic instability characterized the period. Politically it was marked by regional division, the first minority governments, and the failed hopes of the Progressives and the pre-1914 social reform movements. These years saw Canada drift further from Britain’s orbit. Thompson and Seager chart the economic and diplomatic courses of Canada’s closer relationship with the United States and recount attempts of cultural nationalists like the Group of Seven and the Canadian Authors’ Association to create a “native” Canadian culture in the face of the invasion of American movies, magazines, and radio programs. Thompson and Seager have provided a balanced, authoritative history of one of Canada’s most traumatic and least understood periods. Canada, 1922-1939: Decades of Discord will supply amateur as well as academic historians with lively reading. First published in 1985, Thompson and Seager’s important contribution to the Canadian Centenary Series is available here as an e-book for the first time.

Book Description
The Reenchantment of the World is a perceptive study of our scientific consciousness and a cogent and forceful challenge to its supremacy. Focusing on the rise of the mechanistic idea that we can know the natural world only by distancing ourselves from it, Berman shows how science acquired its controlling position in the consciousness of the West. He analyzes the holistic, animistic tradition--destroyed in the wake of Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries--which viewed man as a participant in the cosmos, not as an isolated observer. Arguing that the holistic world view must be revived in some credible form before we destroy our society and our environment, he explores the possibilities for a consciousness appropriate to the modern era. Ecological rather than animistic, this new world view would be grounded in the real and intimate connection between man and nature.
