Revolution, democratic transition and disillusionment
Author: Anca Pusca
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526135299
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
This book develops a fresh and challenging perspective on the transition from communism to capitalism. Drawing on a wide and diverse range of material and texts, it argues that transition and democratisation studies should turn their attention towards processes of illusion formation and disillusionment as key to understanding the shift from one ideological framework to another. The author provides alternative approaches to otherwise classical sites of examination of social change – such as revolutions and the emergence of civil society – and proposes a number of new possible sites by analysing the politics of self-reflection, the element of shock inherent in any transition and the role of visual narratives in negotiating change. The chapters are inspired by unique interviews and discussions with the leaders of the Timisoara Revolution, the Group of Social Dialogue – the first civil society organisation in post-communist Romania, the leading author of the 'Presidential Report Analysing the Communist Dictatorship in Romania' and an innovative group of photographers tracing the Romanian transition through images.

Liberalization of Trade in Financial Services and Financial Sector Stability (Empirical Approach)
Author: Mr.Alexei Kireyev
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1451856059
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 29
Book Description
The paper explores empirically the links between the WTO-driven liberalization of trade in financial services and the stability of national financial systems. Econometric testing of indicators intended to proxy financial sector stability-subdivided into exchange rate and banking sector stability-suggests that opening of the financial sector is an efficient policy instrument at the disposal of the authorities for achieving a variety of macroeconomic goals. While liberalization is found to be broadly conducive to stability, the outcome of liberalization on exchange rate stability is less predictable than on banking sector stability.

Political Economy of Transition
Author: Jozef M. van Brabant
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113474014X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 659
Book Description
This book addresses the policy questions surrounding the challenge of transforming eastern European economies from their planned, administrative past to vibrant market-based entities. Jozef van Brabant considers in turn, the wider set of challenges facing these economies - stabilization, privatization, liberalization, institution building, and developing and maintaining the sociopolitical consensus - before examining the evolving role of the state. Using concrete examples from the eastern European countries throughout, including the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, this work systematically examines, in a society-wide context, the initial conditions of transformation, the policy tasks ahead and the manner in which policies have been pursued.

Foreign Direct Investment in Transitional Economies
Author: Michael Du Pont
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0333977521
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 343
Book Description
Foreign Direct Investment in Transitional Economies presents a detailed investigation into the recent changes in the patterns and determinants in inflows of FDI to transitional economies. The author re-evaluates conventional theories of FDI, and analyses the many changes taking place in the nature of international business, both in terms of the drives of the trans-border transactions, and the strategic orientation of the firms that engage in those transactions. This comparative investigation is based on original research detailing the experiences of FDI in the economies of China and Poland through case studies of over 200 multinationals, and takes into account the dynamic forces of globalization and their effects on FDI.

Trade Shocks and Labor Adjustment
Author: Stephen V. Cameron
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Commercial policy
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
"We construct a dynamic, stochastic rational expectations model of labor reallocation within a trade model that is designed so that its key parameters can be estimated for trade policy analysis. A key feature is the presence of time-varying idiosyncratic moving costs faced by workers. As a consequence of these shocks: (i) Gross flows exceed net flows (an important feature of empirical labor movements); (ii) the economy features gradual and anticipatory adjustment to aggregate shocks; (iii) wage differentials across locations or industries can persist in the steady state; and (iv) the normative implications of policy can be very different from a model without idiosyncratic shocks, even when the aggregate behaviour of both models is similar. It is shown that the equilibrium solves a particular planner's problem, thus facilitating analytical results, econometric estimation, and simulation of the model for policy analysis"--National Bureau of Economic Research web site.
