If they have not surface sequence, they do have essential connection in their purpose to give light and strength to our people as aids to victory. All of them were spoken as sermons at home. Then, being called for, were repeated and somewhat expanded. They were given to Preachers' Meetings in New York, and to various clubs, among them the Rotary Club, the New York Republican Club and the Lawyers' Club of New York. In March, 1918, several of them were spoken to the eight thousand public school teachers of Chicago, and at various times to numerous popular assemblies. Everywhere they were called for in printed form and it was urged that so prepared they would multiply their influence for good. We suddenly find ourselves without any matured principles to guide us in the most trying crisis in the history of the nation and we can recall instances in which, with more or less of explicitness, we have committed ourselves to a policy which a severe test assures us to be wholly inadequate. Hence the change of conviction and, to a much greater extent, of feeling which has come over us. We are free to confess that We have been in the habit of over-estimating the civilization of the age and the country in which we live. Years ago we learned from Gibbon what might be expected of barbarians. But we indulged the hope that the Goths and Vandals belonged only to the early time. We did not expect that an Alaric could come from the land that had given birth to a Washington. The humilia-a ting fact of slavery, of property in man, was indeed before us; and a class of teachers insisted with tolerably severe logic, that a man who would appropriate to his own use the unpaid toil of another, could scruple at nothing. But we had personal acquaintances among slave-holders, and knew that such. An inference, however conclusive as a matter of logic, was not just in point of fact. We could give the names of slave-holders who, aside from what is involved in the fact of being slave-holders, would neither lie, nor steal, nor do an inhuman act. If a wanton injury is threatened to one weaker than myself and I have power to prevent that injury, then, if I fail to exercise that power, I become morally a particeps criminis, and no casuistry can absolve me from complicity in the injury itself. No act is more essentially Christlike than the deliverance of the oppressed. Even if in a particular case the threatened party would be willing in the name of Christ to submit to the injury, it is no whit less my duty to prevent the wrong being done - if possible by persuasion, if not by force. The knight-errant riding the world in search of distressed damsels to succour is as good a Christian as the Quaker literally turning the other cheek. If possible by persuasion, if not by force I have written, but it is just to the addition of the words by force that many thoughtful men, Christian and other wise, will demur. Can force ever, it is asked, prevent wrong And, if so, under what circumstances and with what limitations?
