Excerpt from Who's Who in Finance and Banking: A Biographical Dictionary of Contemporaries, 1920-1922 The present writer pioneered the Who's Who idea in this country, believing that the United States needed a reference book of that kind. He had been connected with newspapers and various publications as a writer and had found great difficulty in procuring adequate data of a biographical character. Beginning about 1890 he had endeavored to interest several publishers in his plans, but each of them regarded the project as one involving much labor with little prospect of profit. Finally one of them, in 1897, took it up and after two years' work the first American Who's Who appeared in 1899. I continued as its sole editor until 1906, when I entered upon other work. I had made it the standard reference book concerning American notables in all lines of useful endeavor, but at the same time realized that one volume, biennially revised, could never adequately cover the list of those who represent the vast activities and interests of the most progressive group of people in the world. Later I edited Who's Who volumes relating to individual States, and wrote several volumes historical in character, but always had in contemplation a more complete filling of the National field. The State idea is a good one applied to the larger States, but impractical in many of the smaller ones, and even in the large commonwealths the volumes combine'sa does the National one, incongruous groups and present mere samples of each of the lines represented, the major part being taken up with public officials, politicians, educators, writers and stage folk; interesting and useful, as far as they go, but leaving a vast field uncovered. I then formulated a plan to prepare several Who's Who volumes, each covering a homogeneous group of subjects, and arranged with the firm of Joseph Sefton for the first of these, Who's Who in Finance which they published. It met with a generous reception, and a second issue was planned, but the disruption of financial conditions with the outbreak of the European War postponed the plan, and the death of Mr. Sefton, with other engagements of the editor, left the matter in abeyance until the incorporation of Who's Who in Finance, Incorporated, under the laws of New York, in 1920, as successor to the firm of Joseph 8: Sefton.
