Book Description
Jacques Lacan is probably the most influential psychoanalyst since Freud (of the roughly 20,000 psychoanalysts in the world, about half are ‘Lacanians’) yet most people know nothing about him. The 10,000 analysts who use Lacan’s ideas work mostly in France, Spain, Italy, and South America. To the rest of the world, including England and America, Lacan is a genius-in-waiting, due to be ‘discovered’ any day now. Despite or because of his brilliance, Lacan is difficult to understand. He wrote with an obscure, style that casually refers to philosophy, linguistics, biology, mathematics, etc.—and to make matters worse, his ideas changed over the years. Lacan For Beginners by Philip Hill introduces the reader to Lacan’s theories and their relation to clinical practice in twelve elegantly structured chapters, designed around tantalizing questions that clarify Lacan’s ideas. Lacan For Beginners is written with insight and wit and illustrated with examples from popular culture and cinema. The artwork is humorous and informative, and works with the text. So don’t you think it is about time you become familiar with his work?

Book Description
This book presents a development of Jean Lowenstamm's idea that phonological constituent structure can be reduced to a strict sequence of non-branching Onsets and non-branching Nuclei. The approach at hand is known as 'CVCV', and emerged from Government Phonology. Since its very beginnings in the early 80s, the central claim of this theory has been that syllable-based generalisations are due to lateral relations among constituents, rather than to the familiar arboreal structure. This book shows that Standard Government Phonology did not go far enough in implementing this idea. CVCV completes the missing steps: structure and causality are fully lateralised. Detailed discussion is offered how basic phonological objects and processes such as Codas, closed syllables, long vowels, geminates, syllabic consonants, vowel-zero alternations, closed syllable shortening, compensatory lengthening, lenition and the like can be represented within the CVCV frame. The first part of the book is called "What is CVCV ?". It presents the properties of the theory. The second part focuses on the reasons why it is worthwhile considering CVCV a valuable and viable approach. The primary goal of the book is not to engage the dialogue with other phonological theories. Rather, it aims at establishing a player in the general game: defining the properties of a theory is always prior to its comparison with other models. In the current OT-dominated phonological scene, then, CVCV appears as a true theory of the 80s insofar as it is representational at core: representations exist and are primitive, rather than arising as accidental results from a heterogeneous set of constraints. The original analyses presented in this book are grounded in the languages that the author is best familiar with, i.e. (Western) Slavic, French, German and some Semitic. Particular attention is paid to diachronic evidence in its relation to the synchronic state of languages.

Book Description
The Book of Letters: American Correspondence is about the letter writing that occurred between two men growing up in different parts of the United States. Lutheran Pastor Les Seto and correctional worker, D H Fortin, developed a lasting friendship that began when they met in church. The two men’s lifelong interest in letter writing soon became apparent. The ten-year span of letter writing between the two men began with sharing the news of Vacaville, CA (pop 96,000) and the smaller city of Waikoloa, HI. You’ll read an account of what was happening to both men during this time period. Americans have certainly struggled with unsettling events from natural disasters to mass shootings. Pastor Seto is comforting and informative as he teaches you how to achieve balance in this life, through scripture and prayer. He shares his own personal account of his struggles and accomplishments of ministering, through a fundamentally sound, understanding of God In his chapters, Fortin shows how letter writing affected him and impacted the inmates he encouraged, while working as a senior counselor in the apex of his prison career. Throughout time, writing letters has been an honorable method of sharing. This book’s how- to application teaches how you can be a blessing to others, by writing about your own experiences with prayer, and the joy of overcoming defeat. Through reading poetry, songs, letters, and books, you’ll learn how authors Fortin and Seto, developed a desire to teach others their skills. You will read about President Thomas Jefferson, songwriter Fanny J. Crosby, author Amy Carmichael, Reverend Billy Graham, a poet, and others. Through their eyes, you will see the methods of reaching out to others with ideas and kind, heartfelt writing. You could be one of ‘The Thousand Points of Light.’
