Book Description
Excerpt from The West Virginia Medical Student, Vol. 1: A Monthly Record of the Progress of Medicine, Surgery, and the Allied Sciences; November, 1875 When the superior laryngeal nerve alone is affected, the aphonia is never complete; the voice is hoarse, and the patient cannot utter the higher notes, while he can generally articulate the deeper ones. Section of the superior laryngeal nerves causes hoarseness, but does not produce complete extinction of the voice; for it paralyzes the crico-thyroid muscle only, and merely causes some relaxation of the vocal membrane, which may be counterbalanced by energetic contraction of the thyro-arytenoid and other muscles. On laryngoscopic examination, the vocal cords will be seen to approach and separate in a normal manner, but the emission of sound is accomplished with difficulty, from a lessened vibration of the vocal cords. Book Description
This biography of James Edmund Reeves, whose legislative accomplishments cemented American physicians' control of the medical marketplace, illuminates landmarks of American health care: the troubled introduction of clinical epidemiology and development of botanic medicine and homeopathy, the Civil War's stimulation of sanitary science and hospital medicine, the rise of government involvement, the revolution in laboratory medicine, and the explosive growth of phony cures. It recounts the human side of medicine as well, including the management of untreatable diseases and the complex politics of medical practice and professional organizing. Reeves' life provides a reminder that while politics, economics, and science drive the societal trajectory of modern health care, moral decisions often determine its path.
