Excerpt from Wealth and Social Progress in Relation to Thrift, Temperance and Trade At the Social Science Congress held in Nottingham, in the autumn of 1882, the President, Mr G. W. Hastings, M.P., defined Political Economy as being 'that branch of exact knowledge which teaches how the wealth of a nation is created, maintained, and fostered; how thrift is best encouraged; how production can be increased, and how distribution can be most advantageously carried on.' In a letter from Professor Bonomy Price, of Oxford, addressed to the writer, the Professor refers to 'Political Economy as being real, as going into the heart of the subjects it explains, recomposing them and placing the reader in front of the very realities of economic action'; adding, 'How sadly these realities are disguised from students!' These definitions seem to indicate truly the scope of political economy. Political Economy having thus to do with the actions of mankind, whether collective or individual, in relation to industrial life, is eminently important, and if not practical must be defective. This book suggests alternative ways of looking at what made a writer, what people gained from writing, and explores the alternative world of temperance periodicals of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It introduces some of the now-forgotten writers who, in their thousands, kept the Victorian periodical presses rolling, and the public entertained. Locating their writing in the context of their personal commitment, the study takes seven prolific writers who were outside what we now think of as the circuits of conventional publication and authorship, and looks at how they found ways to make their voices heard. Their absorption in a cause led them to forge impressive writing careers in a variety of genres and media, focusing around high-circulation temperance periodicals. One hundred twenty years ago, the Independent Order of Good Templars was the world's largest, most militant, and most evangelical organization hostile to alcoholic drink. Standing in the forefront of the international temperance movement, it was recognized worldwide as a potent social and moral force. Temperance and Racism restores the Templars, now an almost forgotten footnote in American and British social history, to a position of prominence within the temperance movement. The group's ideology of universal membership made it unique among fraternal organizations in the late nineteenth century and led to pioneering efforts on behalf of equal rights for women. Its policy toward African Americans was more ambiguous. Though a great many white Templars, especially those in Great Britain, rejected the extreme racism prevalent in the late nineteenth century, members in the American South did not. The decision to allow state lodges to rule on their membership eligibility led to the great schism of 1876-87. The break was mended only after British leaders compromised their ideals of universal brotherhood and sisterhood for the sake of the organization's international unity. Drawing on previously unused primary sources, David Fahey reveals much about racial attitudes and behavior in the late nineteenth century on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line, and on both sides of the Atlantic.
