Book Description
“Gripping and fast-paced, Walt Tuttle’s near-future thriller War For The Spheres is top-notch storytelling with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the very end. Compelling, character-driven stories of this caliber are unique in the science fiction genre, and are, almost literally, as rare and complex as rocket science.” Vincent Di Fate American Astronaut, Hayden Bakley, is an experienced space explorer. As many times as he had been into space, he did not know a quiet, yet, potentially life-altering war for the spheres is taking place all over the world. What if a country, group, or individual seized complete command and control of every orbiter encircling the globe, including space stations? The Outer Space Treaty provides a framework for preventing such seizures, but what if those principles were now thought of as being outdated? That the spheres around the Earth were no different from the land, there to be conquered and controlled. Hayden is drafted into the war for the spheres through no doing of his own. It is up to him and an under-the-radar NASA group to stop such a monopoly from being achieved. For whoever controls the spheres, controls Earth below and space beyond.

Spheres of Intervention
Author: James R. Stocker
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501704141
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
In Spheres of Intervention, James R. Stocker examines the history of diplomatic relations between the United States and Lebanon during a transformational period for Lebanon and a time of dynamic changes in US policy toward the Middle East. Drawing on tens of thousands of pages of declassified materials from US archives and a variety of Arabic and other non-English sources, Stocker provides a new interpretation of Lebanon's slide into civil war, as well as insight into the strategy behind US diplomatic initiatives toward the Arab-Israeli conflict. During this period, Stocker argues, Lebanon was often a pawn in the games of larger powers. The stability of Lebanon was an aim of US policy at a time when Israel’s borders with Egypt and Jordan were in active contention. Following the June 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the internal political situation in Lebanon became increasingly unstable due to the regional military and political stalemate, the radicalization of the country’s domestic politics, and the appearance of Palestinian militias on Lebanese territory. US officials were more deeply involved in Lebanese affairs than most outside the region realized. After a series of internal crises in 1969, 1970, and 1973, civil war broke out in Lebanon in 1975. The conflict reached a temporary halt after a Syrian military intervention the following year, but this was only an end to the first stage of what would be a sixteen-year civil war. During these crises, the US sought to help the Lebanese government in a variety of ways, including providing military aid to the Lebanese military, convincing Arab countries to take measures to help the Lebanese government, mediating Lebanon’s relations with Israel, and even supporting certain militias.

Spheres of Influence
Author: Lloyd C. Gardner
Publisher: Ivan R. Dee Publisher
ISBN: 9781566630580
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The war within the war was the struggle among Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin for the shape of the world that would follow World War II. That delicate diplomacy is traced and analyzed in Lloyd Gardner's brilliant reinterpretation of the negotiations that partitioned Europe and laid the foundations of the cold war. Mr. Gardner begins his story not conventionally in 1941 but with the British attempt to appease Hitler at Munich in 1938. There, he argues, just as after the war at Yalta, the great powers were concerned to avoid a catastrophic war. There were the roots of the territorial agreements that culminated at Yalta - the "spheres of influence" which the Americans sought to avoid as an Old World curse on the possibilities of a freer and more liberal world economy. Using the most recently opened sources, including information from Soviet archives, Mr. Gardner captures the heady atmosphere of these momentous events in deft glimpses of the major personalities and a persuasive analysis of the course of diplomacy. He notes the consistency of Stalin's aims, the opportunism of Churchill for empire, the dilemma of Franklin Roosevelt. For historians, no one's motives have been more puzzling than FDR's. The president yearned to avoid the partition of Europe that his allies wanted, Mr. Gardner concludes, but ultimately he settled for it in the hope of keeping the Big Three together to make a more lasting peace. Playing for time, FDR ran out of it. The result was a divided Europe and the cold war - which the author suggests may have been preferable to an unstable Europe or World War III.

Spheres of Influence in International Relations
Author: Susanna Hast
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317051300
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 198
Book Description
Current events happening around the world, especially the ’humanitarian interventions’ by NATO and the West within the context of the so-called Arab Spring, make the understanding of the role of spheres of influence in international politics absolutely critical. Hast explores the practical implications and applications of this theory, challenging the concept by using historical examples such as suzerainty and colonialism, as well as the emergence of a hierarchical international order. This study further connects the English School tradition, post-war international order, the Cold War and images of Russia with the concept of the sphere of influence to initiate debate and provide a fresh outlook on a concept which has little recent attention.
