The Devil's Eye' was the soldiers' name for the infamous Bulgarian observation post overlooking the British line at Doiran. The troops who fought in the Balkans, and especially the British contingent, became a forgotten army. The British Salonika Force landed in Greece in October 1915, to deter Bulgaria from joining the Central Powers, Germany and Austria-Hungary, in attacking Serbia. The campaign was, from the British perspective, always destined to be a 'side show'. Britain had no political, commercial or strategic interests in the region beyond prosecuting the First World War to a favorable conclusion, but the demands of coalition warfare made a continued Anglo-French presence necessary. This book describes the experiences of the author's great-uncle, Wilberforce Cooper, who was an Anglican priest ministering to the people of Vancouver's downtown east side during 1921-1952. Reverend Cooper began his ecclesiastical calling in the slums of London and then as a British Army chaplain in the hospitals and trenches of WW1 before moving to Canada - first to the B.C. Cariboo and then to be the rector of St. James Church in Vancouver. During the early-mid 1900s the East End of Vancouver was home to most of the city's poor, homeless, addicted and unemployed, and was a magnet for illegal intoxicants, disreputable venues and prostitution. Whitehaven in the Great War covers Whitehaven's immense contribution to the Great War effort; it is thought that 625 Whitehaven men from a town that, in 1901, had a population of around 21,000 lost their lives fighting in the war. Meanwhile, on the home front, military service deprived many businesses of their established male workers, and women went to work in what had previously been exclusively male areas of employment. It was often said, 'No bombing Zeppelin or Gothe ever attacked our peaceful backwater during hostilities.' However, on 16 August 1915 a U-boat, U-24, shelled the Harrington Coke works at nearby Lowca.
