Constraint-based frameworks such as Optimality Theory (OT) have significantly altered phonologists' views on the nature of derivations and their role in linguistic theory. Earlier frameworks of generative phonology were characterized by a fairly complicated theory of derivations, involving lexical levels, the cycle, and intrinsic and extrinsic rule ordering, among other things. OT in its standard form, on the other hand, represents a minimalist theory of derivations, recognizing only a direct mapping from input to output. This volume addresses questions from many different points of view by a number of outstanding scholars: Is this minimal theory sufficiently well-equipped to deal with the empirical complications of natural language or do we need a larger 'derivational residue' in our theory? 'Markedness' refers to the tendency of languages to show a preference for particular structures or sounds. This bias towards 'marked' elements is consistent within and across languages, and tells us a great deal about what languages can and cannot do. This pioneering study presents a groundbreaking theory of markedness in phonology. De Lacy argues that markedness is part of our linguistic competence, and is determined by three conflicting mechanisms in the brain: (a) pressure to preserve marked sounds ('preservation'), (b) pressure to turn marked sounds into unmarked sounds ('reduction'), and (c) a mechanism allowing the distinction between marked and unmarked sounds to be collapsed ('conflation'). He shows that due to these mechanisms, markedness occurs only when preservation is irrelevant. Drawing on examples of phenomena such as epenthesis, neutralisation, assimilation, vowel reduction and sonority-driven stress, Markedness offers an important insight into this essential concept in the understanding of human language.

Miglio argues that to assess the relative markedness of a segment, frequency of occurrence in vowel inventories is insufficient when considered on its own. In its analysis of the Great Vowel Shift, this book elaborates a more useful model of a unitary change even in a surface-oriented theory such as optimality theory, with the help of local conjunction. Miglio extends the device of local conjunction to model opaque relations, and calls for reranking and lexicon optimization as the means to capture change within optimality theory.
