Having fought on and spent so much time in and around the battlefield steeped in the history of the epoch defining battle, Cotton stood uniquely placed to add to the blossoming Waterloo book trade and add his own incomparable story. His book is well researched, interesting and is the source for a great many of the anecdotes that have been lifted for other books on the subject. An excellent addition to the eye-witness accounts, flavoured with a lifetimes knowledge of the battlefield and the original source documents which he uses especially as indexes. During the Waterloo Campaign, Wellington had only one division that was composed entirely of British infantry, the 1st Division.
