Book Description
The Matopos Hills of Zimbabwe have been occupied by humanity for some 40,000 years. They are the home for a number of shrines, and have become a scene of symbolic, ideological, political and armed conflict between the Shona, Ndebele and Europeans for more than 100 years. Many questions in Matopos history are crucial to the history of Matabeleland as a whole, and some central to the history of Zimbabwe: the right relationship of men and women to the land; the nature of culture; the dynamics of ethnicity; the roots of dissidence and violence; and the historical bases of underdevelopment. Book Description
Set in 1950s Italy, "Voice from the Stone" is the gothic and ghost story of Verena, a nurse, and Jakob, a young boy who has fallen silent since the sudden death of his mother Malvina. Jakob is affected by selective mutism. He has decided not to speak believing that silence can bring mummy back and considers Verena as an enemy. Verena's mission is to break Jakob's wall. Jakob fights for his isolation and communicates only with a falcon and the old stones of the ancient country house where they live. As in Henry James' masterpiece "The Turn of the Screw", also in Raffo's haunting psychological thriller everything can be interpreted in a supernatural or non supernatural way and this ambiguity has very amazing results. The inspiration for the novel has came to the author from a real encounter with a boy who chose silence after her mother had abandoned him. Some years later, visiting a little cemetery in Switzerland, Raffo found the names Jakob and Verena written on a grave. Perfect names for his characters tormented by the mysterious voice from the stone.

Book Description
Moniza Alvi's title sequence How The Stone Found Its Voice is a series of poems inspired by creation myths. Begun in the wake of the tragedy of 9/11, they are imbued with the dark spirit of that time, with titles including 'How The World Split In Two', 'How The Answers Got Their Questions' and 'How The Countries Slipped Away'. These are followed by poems in which Moniza Alvi takes a more autobiographical approach to racial conflict and the split between East and West, and by The Return of My Wife' a continuation of a sequence from her earlier book Carrying My Wife. Versions of the French poet Jules Supervielle (1884-1960) with their Second World War background and exploration of personal fragility provide a linking thread. How the Stone Found Its Voice is a varied collection with echoes across its different sections, all equally vital to the whole.

Book Description
The Voice in the Stone is a novel about the Dominican Priest Meister Eckhart (1260 to 1328), regarded by many scholars, theologians, and devotees as one of the great Christian medieval mystics and one of the most brilliant and important of all Christian thinkers. Meister Eckhart was famous in his own lifetime as a preacher and spiritual leader who preached and taught in Germany and France. He was popular with the Beguines, a religious organization of primarily widowed women, many of whom were attracted to mysticism. One of Eckhart's highest priorities was to teach the ignorant and uneducated so that they could learn the art of living and dying. In this pursuit he gave his sermons in the common dialect which aroused considerable enmity from the clergy to whom Latin was the only appropriate language for giving sermons and who saw no reason for trying to lift the peasants out of their rut of poverty. In the year 1326 Meister Eckhart was charged with heresy by the Archbishop of Cologne, essentially on the grounds that he taught matters that could easily lead people astray. Meister Eckhart died during his trial. A year later, Pope John XXII condemned several of the Meister's writings as heretical whereupon they were removed from the church canon. The Meister was not alive to protest and his writings and good name were disgraced. Only in recent years has the church agreed with critics that Meister Eckhart was a good and orthodox theologian, though it has not lifted the official ban on his work. The Voice in the Stone tells the story of Meister Eckhart's life and describes his central spiritual message of oneness with God and his methodology for achieving that union. Because so few personal facts about Meister Eckhart have survived, the author recounts his story through interactions with different characters as they engage in a series of adventures and brushes with the law in a society obsessed with the fear of heresy. The author uses Meister Eckhart's own writings for much of his spoken dialogue and for conveying his spiritual message. The Voice in the Stone includes a short factual biography of Meister Eckhart's life and of the 700 year effort to keep his work alive after his death.
