Whittle, Guinness Brewmasters, Bet on Black. Excerpt: Guinness ( -is) is a popular Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness (1725-1803) at St. James's Gate, Dublin. Guinness is directly descended from the porter style that originated in London in the early 18th century and is one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. A distinctive feature is the burnt flavour which is derived from the use of roasted unmalted barley (though this is a relatively modern development since it did not become a part of the grist until well into the 20th century). For many years a portion of aged brew was blended with freshly brewed product to give a sharp lactic flavour (which was a characteristic of the original Porter). Although the palate of Guinness still features a characteristic "tang," the company has refused to confirm whether this type of blending still occurs. The thick creamy head is the result of the beer being mixed with nitrogen when being poured. It is popular with Irish people both in Ireland and abroad and, in spite of a decline in consumption since 2001, is still the best-selling alcoholic drink in Ireland where Guinness & Co. makes almost 2 billion annually. Book Description
"Since 1926, when this narrative of the Seventh Cavalry's defeat at the hands of the followers of Sitting Bull was first offered to the public, much has been written on the subject, by numerous authors of varying ability. The story of Custer's last fight -- the story of the Little Big Horn -- and the mystery that still enshrouds Custer's fate, continue to fascinate the student of our Indian wars. It is a subject that strangely evokes the interest of each succeeding generation, despite the fact that two-thirds of a century has now elapsed since the Yellow Hair and his cohorts passed into history. Little that is new, and nothing of any moment has been discovered since 1926; and as the years pass, it becomes increasingly unlikely that anything of importance will be discovered. For that reason, and because nearly all those who participated in the fight, officers, soldiers and Indians alike, have now crossed the great divide, the author has found necessary only minor changes in the text, changes that affect the narrative and the substance not at all. Both remain precisely as originally written. The book has received both praise and criticism, as was to be expected. On the whole, however, it has stood the test of the years, and is again offered as the author's earnest and unbiased effort to present an accurate word-picture of the greatest of all combats between the American soldier and the American Indian"--Preface

You’ll never crack open a six again without thinking of this book.” —John Sayles, Director of Eight Men Out and author of A Moment in the Sun The creators of Budweiser and Michelob beers, the Anheuser-Busch company is one of the wealthiest, most colorful and enduring family dynasties in the history of American commerce. In Bitter Brew, critically acclaimed journalist William Knoedelseder tells the riveting, often scandalous saga of the rise and fall of the dysfunctional Busch family—an epic tale of prosperity, profligacy, hubris, and the dark consequences of success that spans three centuries, from the open salvos of the Civil War to the present day.

Book Description
St. Louis Brews, Second Edition: The History of Brewing in the Gateway City features hundreds of historical images, a full chronology of the city's long brewing history, fascinating profiles of more than 125 local breweries, and capsules on the craft, regional, and nineteenth-century breweries. Available again in its second edition, the book begins with St. Louis' earliest brewing history--starting in 1809, the date of the city's incorporation, when beer was sometimes cooled in dug-out canoes--and tells the story of how St. Louis came to be one of America's foremost beer towns. That includes detailed backgrounds on St. Louis' beer barons, including Adolphus Busch and Eberhard Anheuser, a look at the city's golden age of brewing during the Belle Epoque, the impacts of Prohibition, and the InBev takeover of Anheuser-Busch in 2009. Finally, it gives the reader an up-to-the-moment look at the city's astonishing craft brewing scene, which began to blossom in 2009 and is now attracting national attention. Everyone in St. Louis loves to drink beer; they may love to drink it all the more knowing the city's rich backstory in beer and brewing.
