The Herrin Massacre of 1922
Author: Greg Bailey
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476642214
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 179
Book Description
In 1922, a coal miner strike spread across the United States, swallowing the heavily-unionized mining town of Herrin, Illinois. When the owner of the town's local mine hired non-union workers to break the strike, violent conflict broke out between the strikebreakers and unionized miners, who were all heavily armed. When strikebreakers surrendered and were promised safe passage home, the unionized miners began executing them before large, cheering crowds. This book tells the cruel truth behind the story that the coal industry tried to suppress and that Herrin wants to forget. A thorough account of the massacre and its aftermath, this book sets a heartland tragedy against the rise and decline of the coal industry.

Victims of the Herrin Massacre
Author: John Foster
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781511736985
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
On June 22, 1922, one of the deadliest days in the history of labor in the U.S. occurred near and in the town of Herrin, Williamson County, Illinois. On that day, men who had been imported into the county to work at a strip mine during a nationwide coal strike by members of the United Mine Workers of America, were taken prisoner and unarmed, marched for several miles on a warm June morning under the belief that they would be sent out of the area by train. Along the way it became clear to most of them that a different fate awaited them after a more radical faction of striking miners and their supporters took command of the prisoners. Men, who were normally hard working family men, became cold blooded, heartless and relentless killers. Before that Thursday was over, eighteen men would be dead and lying in a makeshift morgue in Herrin. Numerous wounded would find themselves in the Herrin Hospital or making their way back to Chicago. One of those in the hospital would die within days and another two within a few months. The incident would be dubbed "The Herrin Massacre" and be remembered as such for all time. On Sunday, June 25th, 1922, sixteen of the dead were buried in an out of the way spot at the Herrin City Cemetery referred to as the potter's field. Time, as it is wont to do, eventually erased all evidence of the graves as life returned to normal in Herrin and Williamson County. Recent events in the Herrin City Cemetery have resulted in the discovery of the location of these long lost and forgotten graves. For the first time in more than 90 years, the men who came to Herrin in June of 1922 will be revealed. Includes fourteen pages of photos, some seen for the first time, and also for the first time, an accurate, to scale map of the death march and massacre areas, produced by Professor Steven Di Naso of Eastern Illinois University.

History as They Lived It
Author: Margaret Kimball Brown
Publisher: SIU Press
ISBN: 0809333414
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 380
Book Description
“History as They Lived It deserves to be placed within the rich context of Illinois Country historiography going back more than a century. . . . It brings together the fully ripened thoughts of a mature scholar at the very moment that students of the Illinois Country need such a book.”—from the foreword by Carl J. Ekberg Settled in 1722, Prairie du Rocher was at the geographic center of a French colony in the Mississippi Valley, which also included other villages in what is now Illinois and Missouri: Cahokia, Kaskaskia, Fort de Chartres, St. Philippe, Ste. Genevieve, and St. Louis. Located in an alluvial valley near towering limestone bluffs, which inspired the village’s name—French for “prairie of the rock”— Prairie du Rocher is the only one of the seven French colonial villages that still exists today as a small compact community. The village of Prairie du Rocher endured governance by France, Great Britain, Virginia, and the Illinois territory before Illinois became a state in 1818. Despite these changes, the villagers persisted in maintaining the community and its values. Margaret Kimball Brown looks at one of the oldest towns in the region through the lenses of history and anthropology, utilizing extensive research in archives and public records to give historians, anthropologists, and general readers a lively depiction of this small community and its people.

The Jews and Moors in Spain
Author: Joseph Krauskopf
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Jews
Languages : en
Pages : 282
Book Description
"This volume is a reprint of newspaper reports of a series of lectures delivered by the author from the pulpit of Congregation B'nai Jehudah, Kansas City, Mo., during the Fall and Winter of 1885-1886. The lectures were prepared to fulfill the requirements of popular discourses, and designed to convey information upon a highly important epoch of the world's history, that is almost neglected in English literature. The thought of publishing these lectures in book form was utterly foreign to the author throughout their preparation, until an urgent solicitation from very many persons, both Jews and Gentiles, in all parts of this country, whose interest in these lectures was aroused by their wide-spread republication by the Press, made it a duty."--Goodreads.com.

Ancient Greek Cults
Author: Jennifer Larson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134346182
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
Using archaeological, epigraphic, and literary sources; and incorporating current scholarly theories, this volume will serve as an excellent companion to any introduction to Greek mythology, showing a side of the Greek gods to which most students are rarely exposed. Detailed enough to be used as a quick reference tool or text, and providing a readable account focusing on the oldest, most widespread, and most interesting religious practices of the ancient Greek world in the Archaic and Classical periods, Ancient Greek Cults surveys ancient Greek religion through the cults of its gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines. Jennifer Larson conveniently summarizes a vast amount of material in many languages, normally inaccessible to undergrad students, and explores, in detail, the variety of cults celebrated by the Greeks, how these cults differed geographically, and how each deity was conceptualized in local cult titles and rituals. Including an introductory chapter on sources and methods, and suggestions for further reading this book will allow readers to gain a fresh perspective on Greek religion.
