Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Veterinary Hygiene Eighteen years ago, when the first edition of this book appeared, no interest was taken in Veterinary Hygiene outside the profession, and even within it the subject was not taught in the schools, nor formed part of the examina tion of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. During the last few years the interest taken in the matter has been phenomenal; the particular lines along which it has travelled have been in relation to State and Municipal Hygiene, especially the latter, for the necessity of placing the Inspection of both Meat and Milk on an organized basis and under properly trained experts is begin ning to be generally recognised. The time is at hand when Veterinary Officers of Health will have to be created throughout the Kingdom, as a branch of preventive medicine safeguarding the public health. Such appointments will in no way clash with Medical Officers of Health, nor is one subordinate to the other; both confine themselves to the special animal they are trained to deal with, and the only duties they have in common are those of watching over the interests of the public health, for which purpose co-operation on both sides is essential. Book Description
Excerpt from Meat Hygiene Dr. Trotter has four veterinary and sixteen lay assistants. The Veterinarians receive at the beginning $800 per year. The highest salary paid is per year. Each man is paid ac cording to his qualifications and the manner in which he does his work. Country slaughter houses are under control of the rural district police officials. The blood and offal are conveyed to local reduction plants which are conveniently located. Hogs for im mediate slaughter only are permitted around the slaughter houses. The building and equipment when completed will cost as much, if not more, than the one at Edinburgh. Offices with lavatories, lockers and shower baths are provided for the Chief and his assistants. There is a well equipped laboratory with a bacteri ologist and chemist in charge where samples of meat and milk are examined. The administration building is a two story concrete structure. When an animal dies in Scotland the law forbids removal of the carcass until a veterinarian makes a post mortem examination and issues a permit. Glasgow's milk supply is examined by one veterinarian, who inspects the cows barns and utensils. The supply comes from about 900 dairies. The samples collected are examined at the city abattoir. The inspection is not entirely satisfactory. Dr. Trotter's Annual Report for 1910 is submitted, and it con tains some valuable information.
