The landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25 April 1915 represented the greatest amphibious operation carried out during the course of the First World War. What had initially been a purely naval enterprise had escalated to become a full-scale Anglo-French invasion, resulting in an eight-month campaign which Churchill hoped would knock Turkey out of the war. The outbreak of the First World War saw Allied forces across Africa preparing to drive the Germans out of their possessions. Four men earned the Victoria Cross in the prolonged struggle that ensued. Two further VCs were awarded to men of the Indian Army as the British sought to retain control of the North-West Frontier. Fourteen VCs were won in Palestine from mid-1917, as the British went on the offensive and attacked the Ottoman army from bases defending the Suez Canal. Following the Austro-German rout of Italian forces at Caporetto in October 1917, British troops were deployed in Italy. Four VCs were won in this theatre, as the Allies first repelled Austro-German attacks and then launched a series of offensives of their own. Two VCs were also awarded to members of the British Salonika Force, which fought in the Balkans from October 1915. British troops also saw action in Mesopotamia, now Iraq, firstly to protect their country's oil interest and later to prosecute the war against the Turks. Despite initial success, the British suffered an unprecedented military disaster in April 1916 when a substantial British and Indian force was compelled to surrender to its Ottoman opponents at Kut-el-Amara. The unsuccessful attempts to relieve the Kut garrison resulted in the award of eleven VCs; in total, twenty were won in this theatre.

The siege of Kut is a story of blunders, sacrifice, imprisonment and escape. The allied campaign in Mesopotamia began in 1914 as a relatively simple operation to secure the oilfields in the Shatt-al-Arab delta and Basra area. Initially it was a great success, but as the army pressed towards Baghdad its poor logistic support, training, equipment and command left it isolated and besieged by the Turks. By 1916 the army had not been relieved, and on 29 April 1916, the British Army suffered one of the worst defeats in its military history. Major-General Sir Charles Townshend surrendered his allied force to the Turks in the Mesopotamian (now Iraq) town of Kut-al-Amara. The 1917 Palestine campaign saw Britain’s Army rise from defeat to achieve stunning victory. After two failed attacks on Gaza using tactics employed on the Western Front, a new commander was appointed. General Allenby reinvigorated the Army and led it to stunning success in the Third Battle of Gaza.
