Positioning and Surveying Services for Artificial Island Dredging Projects
Author: Intersite Surveys
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Artificial islands
Languages : en
Pages : 226
Book Description
"During the brief arctic summer and fall of 1980, Dome Petroleum Ltd., as part of its expanding program of oil exploration in the Beaufort Sea in Canada, commenced the construction of artificial islands for exploratory drilling. The construction contract was awarded to the dredging division of Royal Volker Stevin nv of The Netherlands. On 5 August 1980 Intersite Surveys bv was commissioned by Volker Stevin Dredging to provide the positioning and surveying services for this project during the 1980 season. The nature of the project demanded that an accurate, reliable and flexible survey and navigation package be provided. To meet these requirements a medium range positioning system "Syledis", combined with Intersite Surveys Quality Control navigation package was supplied. It was initially expected that three vessels would require accurate positioning. These were: a) Trailer Suction Dredger (Geopotes X), b) Survey vessel (Mary B VI), c) Discharge barge (Canmar Barge I). A navigation package was tailor made to suit the specific requirements of each vessel. For various reasons, however, the discharge barge was not really operational during this season, apart from some trials. This report is intended to deal with the main points of interest arising from the survey aspects of this project. For convenience the report is divided into two main parts. PART I gives an account of the day to day operations of the Dredger and Survey vessel. The equipment used, its calibration, operation and performance are all discussed. It continues with an account of various operational aspects, the post-processing and finally, recommendations. The whole is supplemented by detailed appendices and summary of events. PART II contains the survey results in the form of contoured bathymetric charts and selected cross profiles derived from the surveys carried out at regular intervals throughout the island building process. Also included are various charts depicting the results of sand and gravel estimates made by the Geopotes X. (Au)."--ASTIS online database.
