Book Description
Plants produce a considerable number of structures of one kind, like leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds, and this reiteration is a quintessential feature of the body plan of higher plants. But since not all structures of the same kind produced by a plant are identical—for instance, different branches on a plant may be male or female, leaf sizes in the sun differ from those in the shade, and fruit sizes can vary depending on patterns of physiological allocation among branches—a single plant genotype generally produces a multiplicity of phenotypic versions of the same organ. Multiplicity in Unity uses this subindividual variation to deepen our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary factors involved in plant-animal interactions. On one hand, phenotypic variation at the subindividual scale has diverse ecological implications for animals that eat plants. On the other hand, by choosing which plants to consume, these animals may constrain or modify plant ontogenetic patterns, developmental stability, and the extent to which feasible phenotypic variants are expressed by individuals. An innovative study of the ecology, morphology, and evolution of modular organisms, Multiplicity in Unity addresses a topic central to our understanding of the diversity of life and the ways in which organisms have coevolved to cope with variable environments.

Book Description
Excerpt from Variation in Animals and Plants Variation studied from the mathematical standpoint - Variation of birds diagrammatically represented - Distribution of crab measurements - Normal curve of error - Its relation to binomial curve - Variations in animals and plants subject to Law of Frequency of Error - Measurement of variation in terms of Probable Error, Arithmetic Mean Error, and Error, of Mean Square - Examples of asymmetrical series - Representation of these by a generalised mathematical expression. If a number of individuals of any species be compared, it will be found that they all show differences from each other either in size, shape, colour, relation of parts, or other characteristics; in fact, no two of them are exactly alike. Even if offspring be compared with their own parents, similar, though on the whole not such marked, differences will present themselves. Book Description
If two dogs have spots, will their offspring have spots, too? Can a tall plant be the offspring of two short plants? This book examines how traits are passed from one generation to the next in a variety of plant and animal species. Readers will also learn about variations in traits and how plants and animals adapt over time for survival. This important elementary science subject is explained in rich detail, and full-color images add depth to the text. STEM concepts addressed in the Next Generation Science Standards are also included.
