Book Description

Book Description
This book examines discourses of rights and practices of resistance in post-conflict societies, exploring the interaction between the international human rights framework and different actors seeking political and social change. Presenting detailed new case studies from Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka and Kosovo, it reveals the necessity of social scientific interventions in the field of human rights. The author shows how a shift away from the realm of normative political or legal theory towards a more sociological analysis promises a better understanding of both the limits of current human rights approaches and possible sites of potential. Considering the diverse ways in which human rights are enacted and mobilised, The Socio-Political Practice of Human Rights engages with major sites of tension and debate, examining the question of whether human rights are universal or culturally relative; their relationship to forms of economic and political domination; the role of law as a mechanism for social change and the ways in which the language of human rights facilitates or closes sites of radical resistance. By situating these debates in specific contexts, this book concludes by proposing new ways of theorizing human rights. Empirically grounded and offering an alternate framework for understanding the fluid and ambiguous operation of power within the theory and practice of human rights, this volume will appeal to scholars of sociology, law and politics with interests in gender, resistance, international law, human rights and socio-legal discourse.

Book Description
The United Nations as a world organization has gone through different epochs of time facing various challenges and changes since its inception. While it has done a lot in saving humankind in its diverse fields of activities, yet it has failed to function legitimately and effectively according to the principles of its Charter which have brought its existence and relevance under criticism and questioning. The UN after the end of the Cold War, for a short period of time, gave a new hope to the world that it would now work genuinely according to its member-states will in an environment of cooperation and understanding between its member-states for common goals. However, right after the collapse of the communist bloc and the end of capitalist-communist antagonism, the process of globalization, already in force, gained momentum which brought about a new era in the UN's life affecting international relations and the world politics too. The emergence of globalization has created many new challenges not only to the individuals and countries but also to the international institutions and global organizations. This study is an attempt to analyze the real purpose of the emergence of globalization as a policy and its effects on the UN in particular and the international political-economic relations in a wider context. Book Description
Drawing on human rights discourse and a study of the difficulties faced by religious minority groups (using the Ahmadiyya minority group as a case study), this book presents three interconnected challenges to human rights culture in Indonesia. First, it presents a normative challenge, describing the gap between philosophical and normative principles of human rights on one side and the overall problems and critical issues of human rights at national and local levels on the other. Second, it considers the political problems in developing and strengthening human rights culture. The political challenge addresses the ability (or inability) of the state to guarantee the rights of certain individuals and minority groups. Third, it examines the sociological challenge of majority-minority group relationships in human rights discourse and practices. This book describes the background of human rights in Indonesia and reviews the previous literature on the issue. It also presents a comprehensive review of the discourses about human rights and political changes in contemporary Indonesia. The analysis focuses on how human rights challenges affect the situation of religious minorities, looking in particular at the Ahmadiyya as a minority group that experiences human rights violations such as discrimination, persecution, and violence. The study fills out its treatment of these issues by examining the involvement of actors both from the state and society, addressing also the politics of human rights protection.
