Book Description
Over 100,000 Canadian workers participate annually in educational programs conducted by their union or the broader labour organizations to which their union belongs. Union-based education is the most significant non-vocational education available to working people. This activity has been going on for decades, and Jeffery Taylor's Union Learning: Canadian Labour Education in the Twentieth Century is the first comprehensive history of it. Union Learning chronicles the rise and decline of the Workers' Educational Association, the development of internal union educational programs, the consolidation of the Canadian Labour Congress's educational system after 1956, the origin and growth of the Labour College of Canada, and the patchy history of university and college involvement in labour education. Taylor argues that a new emphasis on broad-based and activist education today promises to rekindle the sense of an educational movement that was present in the labour movement in the 1930s and 1940s. The book includes a number of illustrative sidebars and photographs. He has developed a website containing images, video and other materials related to the history of labour education in Canada: http: //unionlearning.athabascau.ca

Book Description
Who faces barriers - in the workplace, in the union, in education and training? What can the union do differently once aware of these barriers? What results are achieved? Is there a broader impact within the union? These are some of the questions answered in a new report prepared by the Labour Education Centre and Centre for the Study of Education and Work (CSEW). In seeking innovative learning practices, the project focused on union education programs that address systemic barriers related to class, age, gender, sexual orientation, race and cultural background, disability, literacy, language, lack of formal education as well as barriers faced by workers in small or remote areas, by part-time workers, by shift workers. The report provides examples of the barriers identified and addressed, barriers which may exist in any and every aspect of education programs: * How learning takes place: the approach to learning, the methodology * What is the subject of learning: the content, the curriculum * Who is and is not participating: the diversity of union members, reflected in recruitment and facilitation Where the programs are conducted: at the workplace, the union hall, the community, in workers' homes * When programs are scheduled: on work time, on workers' own time while juggling shifts, more than one job, personal responsibilities * Why unions initiate programs: the purpose, how unions shape and define their programs, program planning and design Table of contents: Sketches Literacy, High School * Canadian Labour Congress: Workplace Literacy Project * Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec: Basic Skills Initiative * Nova Scotia Federation of Labour: Lighting the Way with Workplace Education * Canadian Union of Public Employees: Literacy Program Canadian Auto Workers: BEST Program * United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832 Training Centre: Mature Student Diploma Program Workplace Programs * Canadian Auto Workers: Workplace Training Program * United Steel Workers: Anti-Harassment Workplace Training Program * Ontario Public Service Employees Union: Systemic and Anti-Racism Organizational Change Program * United Steel Workers Locals 480 and 9705 / Teck Cominco: Learning Centre * Fonds de solidarité de la FTQ: Foundation for Economic Education, Workplace Education Initiative Apprenticeship, Pre-Apprenticeship, Work Skills Training * Canadian Union of Postal Workers: Apprenticeship Training Program for Postal Workers * Canadian Auto Workers: Women and Technology Program * Northern Territories Federation of Labour: Preparing Northern Women for Careers in Trades and Technical Occupations in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut: A Model for Program Development and Delivery * United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1977 Training Centre: Work Skills Program * Carpenters' Local 27: CHOICE Pre-Apprenticeship Program Central Ontario Building Trades: Youth Access to Apprenticeship * International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 353: Canadian Experience Course Labour Education * Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec: Collège FTQ-Fonds * Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec: Worker-Educator Program: Training Trainers * CLC Ontario Region: Equality Initiative * British Columbia Federation of Labour Organizing * Institute: Lead Organizer Training Program * Various: Solidarity and Pride * United Food and Commercial Workers Canada: Youth Internship Program * Saskatchewan Federation of Labour: Solidarity Works Saskatchewan Federation of Labour: Prairie School for Union Women * Canadian Auto Workers: Paid Education Leave Program Canadian Auto Workers / McMaster University: Labour Studies Certificate Program * Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union: Mentorship Program * Public Service Alliance of Canada: Leadership Program Canadian Labour Congress, Women's and Human Rights Department: "The Wall"--Starting With Women's Lives: Changing Today's Economy Integrated Initiatives * United Food and Commercial Workers Canada: UFCW Canada Training Centres * UFCW Locals 175 and 633 Training Centre: Internet Distance Education Program * Toronto and York Region Labour Council: Labour Education Centre: Implementing a Labour Education Framework * UNITE HERE Local 75: A Training Strategy for Hospitality Workers in UNITE HERE Additional References.

Book Description
While much mainstream educational research maintains that teacher unions should be outlawed or their powers greatly reduced, Bascia and her contributors, including many of the leading teacher union researchers working today, challenge this position. Instead, they recognize the important role teacher unions must play in defending public education and in minimizing the damage wrought by ill-thought-out educational policies. By avoiding idealization of these organizations and recognizing their limitations, Teacher Unions in Public Education demonstrates the necessity for union renewal for a successful education system.
