Community Empowerment, Sustainable Cities, and Transformative Economies
Author: Taha Chaiechi
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811652600
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 699
Book Description
This edited volume presents the conference papers from the 1st International Conference on Business, Economics, Management, and Sustainability (BEMAS), organized by the Centre for International Trade and Business in Asia (CITBA) at James Cook University. This book argues that the orthodox methods of external risks, climate change adaptation plans, and sustainable economic growth in cities are no longer adequate. These methods, so far, have not only ignored the ongoing structural changes associated with economic development but also failed to account for evolving industries’ composition and the emergence of new comparative advantages and skills. Specifically, this book looks at the vulnerable communities and exposed areas, particularly in urban areas, that tend to experience higher susceptibility to external risks (such as climate change, natural disasters, and public health emergencies) have been largely ignored in incremental adaptation plans. Vulnerable communities and areas not only require different adaptive responses to climate risk but also possess unlocked adaptive capacity that can motivate different patterns of sustainable development to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda. It is essential, therefore, to view transformative growth and fundamental reorientation of economic resources as integral parts of the solution. Social disorganisation and vulnerability are other undesired outcomes of the unpredictable and widespread external economic shocks. This is due to a sudden and tough competition between members of society to acquire precious resources, most of which may be depleted during unprecedented events such as natural disasters or pandemics resulting in an even more chaotic and disorganised conditions.

Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1455207640
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 46
Book Description
Irish policymakers have gained significant credibility, through assertive steps, to deal with the most potent sources of vulnerability. A continuation of vigorous policy efforts is required with an emphasis on risk management. Much progress has been made on the financial stability agenda, but a special bank resolution scheme is required. The government has stayed on course, toward their consolidation goals. A medium-term fiscal framework incorporating expenditure ceilings is a valuable management tool that will help create greater transparency of fiscal priorities and reduce fiscal volatility.

Inside the Room
Author: Eamon Gilmore
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781785370359
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
March 2011, in Ireland: Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore have just formed a coalition government between Fine Gael and Labour Party. Ireland's banks are broken, unemployment is heading toward half a million, the public finances are in serious deficit, international lenders rate Ireland as 'junk, ' and the country is in an IMF bailout. As Tanaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) in the new Coalition, Eamon Gilmore was at the heart of every major economic decision taken during his term, and, as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, he was primarily responsible for restoring Ireland's international reputation and trade connections. In this extraordinary political memoir of those turbulent times, Eamon Gilmore writes frankly about the political price the Labour Party has paid for some of their choices. He reflects on the circumstances that led to his own resignation and assesses the prospects for Ireland's continued recovery, including the risks which could yet blow Ireland's and Europe's economies off course. *** Librarians: ebook available [Subject: Memoir, Irish Studies, Politics, Contemporary History

The Experience of Unemployment
Author: A. Waton
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349184543
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
Increasingly high unemployment has brought with it a multitude of consequences affecting those without jobs and, beyond them, their families, friends and communities. This book reports findings from original research. It explores, often in the words of the unemployed and others involved, what life without a job is like. It challenges many widely held beliefs about the unemployed - that they are workshy, price themselves out of jobs or earn money illegally on the side - and explores where such misconceptions come from. It reveals the inherent contradictions involved in trying to search for work whilst coping with the experience of unemployment.
