Ideas are ubiquitous. They are the fundamental building blocks for all aspects of life. Yet, efforts to use ideas as a basic unit of analysis in a shared framework are rare. We often find it difficult to look past the artificial boundaries that academic disciplines and specialist fields of knowledge construct. In this book, the authors address this substantial lacuna by proposing an intuitive theory of ideas that serves as a trans-disciplinary basis for studying innovation and creativity. In response, and to support NATO National Chiefs of Transformation efforts, the ITX Chairs Network issued a call for papers to increase the understanding of leader development, refine concepts, and develop content to be used in U.S. and international fora. Seventeen of the papers published here were presented in Washington. Two of the papers were submitted before the conference, but the authors were not able to attend. The views are those of the individual authors. And yet “redskins” is a derogatory name for American Indians. The number of grassroots campaigns to change the name has risen in recent years despite the current team owner’s assertion that the team will never do so. Franchise owners counter criticism by arguing that the team name is positive and a term of respect and honor that many American Indians embrace.
