Pourtant, nombre de pistes restent encore à explorer au-delà de l'histoire de l'État et des politiques publiques, et des histoires centrées sur le cadre national. L'objectif de cet ouvrage, qui réunit neuf historiens européens, est donc d'inviter à repenser l'écriture de cet important chantier de l'histoire sociale en proposant tant des états des lieux sectoriels que des pistes de renouvellements problématiques. D'une part, via des approches transnationales. On peut ainsi s'interroger sur l'existence de modèles spécifiques à l'Europe du Nord, qui fait l'objet de nombreux travaux, mais aussi du Sud (Fulvio Conti) ou de l'Est (Dorena Caroli).
