Book Description
Excerpt from British Wild Flowers: Illustrated The vegetable kingdom is naturally divided into two great sec tions, the plants of which, while exhibiting for the most part con siderable differences in internal structure, are more, remarkably distinguished by the mode in which they propagate their kind. Those of one division possess no distinct flowers or seeds in which the germ of the future plant is enveloped, but multiply by means of minute cellular bodies called spores. Those of the other have distinct floral organs and produce seeds properly so called. The former section, called by botanists Cryptogamia, includes Ferns, Mosses, Lichens, Seaweeds and Fungi, with some other vegetables not comprised under these designations; the latter, the Phanero gamia or Flowering Plants, to the British species of which our present book alone refers. A plant, in this, its more highly developed form, usually consists of four distinct parts, which, while' they are all modifications of the same organic type, consisting of cells and vessels variously arranged, have yet very different offices assigned them in the oeconomy of Nature. They are the root, stem, leaves, and flower. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Illustrated Handbook of the British Plants The use of the terms Arctic, Boreal, Germanic, Atlantic types, &c., was declined as inexpedient, and as more likely to puzzle and perplex the junior student than to enlighten him. This work is not meant to embrace the objects for which the Cybele was composed. It is an introduction to the knowledge of British plants, not the history of their immigration, colonization, and subsequent naturalization and complete establishment in this island. But another important con sideration remains to be urged in justification of the procedure adopted; and this should be duly weighed by all who voluntarily undertake the office of public teachers, whether from the press or platform, viz., that it is not prudent to originate more questions than they can satisfactorily answer. It is a truism that questions are more easily asked than answered and as the proverb teaches us, that a fool may ask a question which seven wise men cannot answer, it was judged desirable, in an elementary work, to avoid all such terms as might induce doubts or questionings in the minds of the readers. Moreover, a natural historian has to deal with things, and not opinions. The Author professes to state facts, and he has not yet attained to a complete conviction that the classification of the British, or of any species, into natives, denizens, or colonists, naturalized and semi-naturalized, is a fact, or is in all cases founded on facts; and therefore he leaves this matter to be settled, or modified, or adjusted by those learned authorities who have made these branches of the science their particular or special study. Book Description
Excerpt from A Systematic Arrangement of British Plants Every body knows how much the writings of the late Sir James E. Smith, of Dr. Hooker, Lightfoot, and other English botanists, have tended to diffuse a taste for botanical pursuits. Their works at least could not be overlooked. Original descriptions have occasionally been furnished, and. Various particulars rela tive to the uses of plants added, by the compiler, who is sorry that he has not here to record any assistance derived from his botanical friends, although to one gentleman he is indebted for many valuable suggestions respecting the general plan of the work. Excepting the Ferns, the Cryptogamic Plants have been omitted, as too difficult for the Student, until he has rendered the more attractive species familiar. Several species generally admitted as native, but upon insufficient evidence, have also been omitted. Although the compiler cannot boast of so critical 3. Knowledge of Botany as of some other departments of Natural History, he is yet sufficiently aware of the difficulties which the Student of that science has to encounter, and has been deeply impressed with the importance of precise characters and pure language in every science. It is therefore confidently hoped that the work will prove useful; and should the author have contributed in any considerable degree to facilitate the progress of beginners in the delightful study of Botany, he will be grateful to Him who has permitted such a use of the faculties bestowed upon him. It were alike unnecessary and useless to say any thing here in recommendation of the science of plants: unnecessary, because its fascinations have been exten sively felt - and useless, because they who may peruse this work, if they do not love Nature for her own sake, will hardly be persuaded to love her for any thing that another might say in her praise.
