Custom permitted it to add new members but not to subtract old ones. It was capable of admissions but not of emissions - even nocturnal, for the club has never had any night life, except once a year when it renders a single night hideous by the sudden eructation and evacuation of all the Obscenities accumulated during the past twelvemonth. As any zoologist can tell you, the thing that made the wildcat wild was the lack of an egress for contents no longer desirable or comfortable. The original Dutch Treat Club similarly lacked the power to expel. Among the earliest additions to its membership was a brilliant young man who began to proclaim a belief that Oscar Wilde was the greatest of artists. A few of us less reputable members took issue with the enthusiasm of any one who would have converted us into Wilde cats We wanted to demonstrate our normal ability to expel - just as a general proposition. In fact, the moving spirit Of that historic group argued that the nearer such a club reflected a state Of anarchy, the greater its chances for survival! Inexorably, the march of time, events and affluence modified such radical views as those uttered by George Barry Mallon, the redoubtable city editor of The Sun who wound up in the banking business. Mallon had illustrious company in such rugged individualists as Rupert Hughes, Ellis Parker Butler, Tom Masson and James Montgomery Flagg - the latter two serving as dtc prexies no. 1 and 2. But he was its original Spark plug, gave the club its name, was president at the time he died, in 1928, and has his memory preserved by the club's benevolent Mallon Fund. Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the Dutch architect and architectural philosopher, created a series of buildings and a body of writings from 1886 to 1909 that were among the first efforts to probe the problems and possibilities of modernism.
