Excerpt from Twentieth Report to the Legislature of Massachusetts: Relating to the Registry and Return of Births, Marriages and Deaths, in the Commonwealth, for the Year Ending December 31, 1861 The Results of the Nineteenth Report have been so far incorporated in this as to maintain the continuity of the several Tables which embrace a series of years, so that no inconvenience may hereafter be experienced from the absence of the details of any one year. Two events have transpired which will have an important bearing on the statistics of all parts of the nation, viz. The breaking out of a war involving the whole land, and the publication of a part of the reduced Returns of the United States Census for 1860. These have not been lost sight of, in the present Report. In regard to the first event, little had been gathered during the year 1861, but initiatory steps have been taken in reference to prospective results from the nature of war itself, and from the necessary derangement of the ordinary pursuits and relations of life. The Returns of the Census of 1860, on account of the broad area they embrace, have afforded a more intelligible and satisfactory apprehension of the local influences which determine disease, especially those diseases on which the salubrity of the community most depend. In this connec tion the Tables exhibiting the prevalence of Consumption and Fevers and their relative distribution, will be found especially interesting.
