Book Description
This exciting resource covers the fundamentals of wireless and PLC technologies. Different types of wireless and PLC technologies used for indoor IoT applications are described. The channel models for both wireless and power line communications are introduced, highlighting the main challenges for these types of communications inside the indoor environment. The book explores the hybrid technologies with television white space (TVWS), very high frequency (VHF) wireless technology, and broadband PLC (BPLC) for indoor high speed IoT networks. A TVWS standardized BPLC system is proposed, which integrates the requirement of primary user sensing and the permissible transmission power spectral density (PSD) for TVWS users into BPLC standard, regarding VHF band access. The hybrid ultra-high frequency (UHF) wireless-powerline sensor networks with a focus on enlarging the network lifetime via cross-layer optimization is presented. Hybrid video sensor networks (HVSNs) with high data rate requirement are explored. Through the joint design of video encoding rate, aggregate power consumption, channel access control, along with link rate allocation, a distributed algorithm is developed, which divides the computational burden among all nodes with much lower communication overhead. The effectiveness of the cross-layer designs are evaluated through extensive simulation results.

Book Description
Understanding Broadband over Power Line explores all aspects of the emerging technology that enables electric utilities to provide support for high-speed data communications via their power infrastructure. This book examines the two methods used to connect consumers and businesses to the Internet through the utility infrastructure: the existing electrical wiring of a home or office; and a wireless local area network (WLAN) access point. Written in a practical style that can be understood by network engineers and non-technologists alike, this volume offers tutorials on electric utility infrastructure and home wiring, to ensure that all readers have a common base of knowledge. It reviews power line operations, analyzing how electricity is generated and delivered to consumers, and how the wiring inside buildings forms individual circuits. An appreciation for how technologies work allows for an understanding of how broadband over power line has the potential to provide ubiquitous communications that offer home users, network managers, and LAN administrators with another solution to meet their high-speed networking requirements.

Book Description
Broadband Powerline Communications: Network Design covers the applications of broadband PLC systems in low-voltage supply networks, a promising candidate for the realization of cost effective solutions for “last mile” communications networks. There are many activities surrounding the development and application of PLC technology in the access area, particularly because of strong interest of new network providers after the deregulation of telecommunications market. Nowadays, there are no existing standards for broadband PLC networks, which use a frequency range up to 30 MHz. This book includes relevant and timely information regarding broadband PLC systems and especially PLC access networks and contributions to the design aspects of broadband PLC access systems and their network components. This book: Offers explanations on how broadband PLC networks are realized, what the important characteristics for the transmission on electrical power grids are, and which implementation solutions have been recently considered for the realization of broadband PLC systems. Considers various system realizations, disturbance scenarios and their impact the transmission in PLC networks, electro-magnetic compatibility, applied modulation schemes, coding, and error handling methods. Pays particular attention to the specifics of the PLC MAC layer and its protocols, as well as the modelling and performance evaluation of broadband PLC networks.

Book Description
Although sophisticated wireless radio technologies make it possible for unlicensed wireless devices to take advantage of un-used broadcast TV spectra, those looking to advance the field have lacked a book that covers cognitive radio in TV white spaces (TVWS). Filling this need, TV White Space Spectrum Technologies: Regulations, Standards and Applications explains how white space technology can be used to enable the additional spectrum access that is so badly needed. Providing a comprehensive overview and analysis of the topics related to TVWS, this forward-looking reference contains contributions from key industry players, standards developers, and researchers from around the world in TV white space, dynamic spectrum access, and cognitive radio fields. It supplies an extensive survey of new technologies, applications, regulations, and open research areas in TVWS. The book is organized in four parts: Regulations and Profiles—Covers regulations, spectrum policies, channelization, and system requirements Standards—Examines TVWS standards efforts in different standard-developing organizations, with emphasis on the IEEE 802.22 wireless network standard Coexistence—Presents coexistence techniques between all potential TVWS standards, technologies, devices, and service providers, with emphasis on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) recent regulations and policies, and IEEE 802.19 coexistence study group efforts Important Aspects—Considers spectrum allocation, use cases, and security issues in the TVWS network This complete reference includes coverage of system requirements, collaborative sensing, spectrum sharing, privacy, and interoperability. Suggesting a number of applications that can be deployed to provide new services to users, including broadband Internet applications, the book highlights potential business opportunities and addresses the deployment challenges that are likely to arise.

Book Description
Although Internet governance deals with the core of the digital world, governance cannot be handled with the digital-binary logic of the true or false, or good or bad. Instead, the subject demands many subtleties and shades of meaning and perception, requiring an analogue approach, covering a continuum of options and compromises. The aim of the book An Introduction to Internet Governance, by Dr Jovan Kurbalija, is to provide a comprehensive overview of the main issues and actors in the field through a practical framework for analysis, discussion, and resolution of significant issues. Written in a clear and accessible way, supplemented with figures and illustrations, it focuses on the technical, security, legal, economic, development, sociocultural, and human rights aspects of Internet governance. The text and approaches presented in the book have been used by DiploFoundation and many universities as a basis from training courses and capacity development programmes on Internet governance.
