Turning Homeward
Author: Adrienne Ross Scanlan
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Grief-stricken after her father's death, Adrienne Ross Scanlan journeys west to seek a new life in a new place. Arriving in Seattle without a job and knowing no one, she encounters the iconic Pacific Northwest salmon in an unlikely place--a Puget Sound suburban creek--and discovers home by helping restore the nature that lives alongside us. Part memoir, part science-based nature writing, Turning Homeward takes us into the messiness and satisfaction of hands-on restoration, whether it's the citizen science of monitoring coho salmon die-offs in a Seattle creek or relocating a bumblebee hive. Along the way, Scanlan explores the real-world paradoxes of repairing home, such as when one nonnative transplant (Scanlan) yanks out another (Himalayan blackberry) to create habitat for native plants, or the opposing needs of homeless people versus birds, who both seek refuge in a beloved city park. What Scanlan learns about nature's resilience and the Jewish concept of tikkun olam (repair of the world) sustains her when her beloved daughter is born premature. In lyrical writing that engages but never preaches, Turning Homeward's heartfelt union of science and spirit shows that restoring the nature close to our lives also restores our courage, joy, and hope for the future.

Thinking in the Light of Time
Author: Karin de Boer
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 0791492974
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 426
Book Description
Heidegger's lifelong project of exposing and deconstructing the presuppositions governing the history of metaphysics begins with the conception of temporality outlined in Being and Time, a work which Heidegger never completed. In Thinking in the Light of Time, de Boer not only traces the notion of temporality developed in Being and Time, but goes beyond the published portion of that work to offer a reconstruction of its pivotal third division based on a systematic interpretation of other works, many of which have only recently been published. Emphasizing the continuity between Heidegger's early and later thought, de Boer provides a systematic interpretation of Heidegger's work as a whole. Hegel's claim to have perfected metaphysics is central to de Boer's concern with Heidegger's attempt to deconstruct metaphysics. Heidegger's struggles to come to terms with Hegel's speculative science, especially the manner in which Hegel regards his own project as founded upon an understanding of time, is thus one of the focal points of de Boer's interpretation of Heidegger's deconstruction of metaphysics. De Boer argues that it is especially in his reading of Hegel that one sees how deeply Heidegger is committed to the attempt to do justice to the radical finitude of human life and its possible philosophical self-interpretations. Her reading of Heidegger shows how his works paved the way for the deconstructive efforts that guide Derrida's thought.

Heidegger and Homecoming
Author: Robert Mugerauer
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 080209810X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 641
Book Description
Martin Heidegger's philosophical works devoted themselves to challenging previously held ontological notions of what constitutes "being," and much of his work focused on how beings interact within particular spatial locations. Frequently, Heidegger used the motifs of homelessness and homecoming in order to express such spatial interactions, and despite early and continued recognition of the importance of homelessness and homecoming, this is the first sustained study of these motifs in his later works. Utilizing both literary and philosophical analysis, Heidegger and Homecoming reveals the deep figural unity of the German philosopher's writings, by exploring not only these homecoming and homelessness motifs, but also the six distinctive voices that structure the apparent disorder of his works. In this illuminating and comprehensive study, Robert Mugerauer argues that these motifs and Heidegger's many voices are required to overcome and replace conventional and linear methods of logic and representation. Making use of material that has been both neglected and yet to be translated into English, Heidegger and Homecoming explains the elaborate means with which Heidegger proposed that humans are able to open themselves to others, while at the same time preserve their self-identity.

Articulated Experiences
Author: Peyman Vahabzadeh
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 0791487407
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 234
Book Description
By reexamining the very foundations of everyday acting and thinking and stepping into the open expanse of a possible transition to a postmodern era, this book presents a radical phenomenological approach to the study of contemporary social movements. It offers a theory of acting that refuses to surrender to norms and legislations and thus always intimates a mode of thinking that challenges various manifestations of ultimacy. Vahabzadeh invites us to radically rethink many basic principles that inform our lives, such as the democratic discourse, the concept of rights, liberal democratic regimes, time and epochs, oppression, acting, and the practice of sociology, in an effort to instate a reworked concept of experience in theories about social movements.

Whispers Beyond the Edge: Glimpses of the Beloved
Author: Royal L. Craig
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1450079741
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 136
Book Description
A SPIRITUAL FEAST! Even as the moth is drawn to self-immolation in the brightness of the candle's flame, so is the spirit of the mystic drawn to self-immolation as it soars to the Sun of its own being. The earth ceases to exist and the heavens grow ever brighter. Words are tattered beyond repair and the spirit becomes one with the living Flame of Love. Such is the ecstasy and the passion as the mystic reaches ever deeper into the mysterious Source of all. Once triumphant in the journey, the realized souls moved by compassion, return to assist others in the upward path. Individually commissioned as the need arises, they come into the prison of this world as ambassadors of Truth. All of us are mystics, but man is an unrealized mystic due to preoccupation with the gifts of this world and his blind ignorance of the Divine Giver. We have become saturated with the world, but the true goal of life is to become saturated with the Divine and return to that home we left so long ago. Royal has been a student at a number of schools of esoteric and mystical teachings in Canada, America, Europe, and the Far East. He states, "Reading these writings of mine are like dipping your toe at the water's edge along the shore of the Ocean of Love for one brief moment; may you be brave enough to dive to the depths."
