Book Description
The number of factors implicated in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation is already considerable and more are continually being identified. This book concentrates on tumor necrosis factor (cachectin) and lymphotoxin, but includes observations of their interactions with other cytokines, especially the interferons and interleukins. TNF can be either cytostatic or cytotoxic to cultured cell lines, and a variety of mechanisms are proposed, ranging from DNA fragmentation to activation of phospholiopases. TNF is also reported to stimulate the growth of normal fibroblasts in vivo. The in vivo actions of TNF described here include haemorrhagic necrosis of tumors, cachexia, effects on the vasculature, and antiparasitic and antiviral activities. Also presented is some interesting data from the first stages of clinical trials of TNF as an anticancer agent.

Book Description
Many of the most effective treatments for disease have been discovered empir ically. Nowadays, however, we think that understanding the biology of a disease will lead us to design better treatments, and to improve the application of treatments we already have. To accomplish this, vast sums are expended on cancer research. Even so, to the casual observer of clinical oncology the proliferation of studies and trials of ever-different combinations of therapies looks like empiricism, at the best. In the first part of this book, we have asked practising clinicians in different specialities to assess the contributions of biology and of empiricism to current approaches to treatment. In the second part, we have asked researchers in different areas of biology applied to cancer to assess the present and likely future impact of their type of biology on cancer treatment and control. IX 1 Surgery M.BAUM OBJECTIVES OF CANCER TREATMENT The objectives of cancer treatment can be defined according to population requirements or according to the needs of the individual. As far as the population is concerned, Government authorities are entitled to expect that cancer treatment will lead to mortality reductions and cost containment.

Book Description
Role of Nutraceuticals in Chemoresistance to Cancer, Volume Two, focuses on nutraceuticals, the compounds derived from natural sources, which are usually multi-targeted as a means to overcome chemoresistance. This book discusses the role of several compounds related to nutraceuticals and chemoresistance, such as curcumin, resveratrol, indole 3-carbinol, tocotrienols, ursolic acid, fisetin, celastrol, gambogic, butein, catechins and silymarin. It is a valuable resource for cancer researchers, oncologists and members of several areas of the biomedical field who are interested in understanding how to use nutraceuticals as a sensitizing agent for chemotherapy. - Brings updated information on natural compounds used as specific inhibitors of cell signaling pathways as reviewed by experts in the field - Presents experts analysis and summary of reported and novel findings and potential translational application in cancer patients - Describes molecular mechanisms with new and helpful approaches for the readers to use in their own investigations

Book Description
Handbook of Mediators in Septic Shock presents a comprehensive, systematic evaluation of the various putative mediators of septic shock through the use of meta-analysis. Experts of individual mediators have objectively evaluated the collective literature using classical Koch-Dale Criteria for causal relationships. A decision tree approach has been used to analyze the existing evidence for each of the four Koch-Dale Criteria for each individual mediator of septic shock. The book provides an integrated perspective that describes how these many mediators interact. It also covers how advances in mathematical modeling of complex realities are applied to the field of septic shock pathogenesis. CRC Handbook of Mediators in Septic Shock will be a useful reference for emergency room and intensive care physicians, trauma specialists, pathophysiologists, physiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, and others interested in the topic. Book Description
These volumes, Cytolytic Lymphocytes and Complement: Effectors of the Immune System, originate from the realization that pathways of recognition and killings of foreign targets follow similar routes in the humoral and cellular part of the immune system. In particular, the homology of immunoglobins with the T-cell-MHC-antigen receptor at the beginning of the recognition sequence and the homology of complement component C9 with lymphocyte perforin 1 (P1) as pore formers at the end of the effector sequence are striking examples.
