Book Description
When the Rodrigos are forced to abandon their church and parsonage in Arizona in 1952, the family makes a decision to move to California’s San Joaquin Valley, where fieldwork is plentiful and a rental waits for them. Seventeen-year-old Marta Rodrigo is worried. They’re low on traveling money, the old station wagon is on its last leg, and they don’t know whether the rental will still be available to them. Worse, they are leaving behind Grandmother, who fell during a stroke, and her brother Phil, who is at war in Korea. Marta’s faith is under attack as her fifteen-year-old brother, Julian, has made her life miserable. She sees their Arizona home as their point of contact with God, their cypress trees and terrain serving as her hope. Leaving that normalcy behind, Marta believes life will never be the same; depression leaves her questioning her faith. But when the Rodrigos arrive in Somerville, California, they meet a young man named Henry Barnes who provides Marta with a new hope for the future and helps her reconnect with her trust in a heavenly God who was always faithful and just. Set in the mid-twentieth century, this novel follows a young woman dealing with challenges to her faith when her family moves from Arizona to California.

Book Description
Phyllis Hotsenpiller Hays (momma) grew up in a rural Ozark community. She was the last of four and came seven years later than the rest. Momma grew up on a farm rebounding from the horrible times of the Great Depression. Her daddy and brother worked the farm and daddy also worked in town. Momma loved her big brother and learned everything about farming from him. Momma also loved reading. When the chores were done she would while away the summer days under a big oak tree reading one of Americas classic novels. Her sisters took care of the domestic chores but one by one they married and left home leaving Momma with more responsibilities. Momma loved being on the farm and tagging along with her brother to the rodeo. Momma loved riding horses and became a trick rider in the rodeo. Life was good for Phyllis Hotsenpiller until age 13 when her daddy became ill with a brain tumor and after long suffering with horrible headaches he died. Mommas momma, Grandma Hotsenpiller, was a good Christian woman and never turned her back on a single soul. But her momma could not handle the weight of losing her husband and not knowing what to do with the farm. Momma worked the farm until the farm sold and momma was sent to live with her oldest sister. In the blink of an eye Mommas life was forever changed and she was now forced to grow up all at once.

Book Description
A vast number of studies have documented the economic and geological effects of oil production, but the impact of boom-and-bust cycles on individuals and communities has received less attention. Boom or Bust remedies this gap by highlighting the personal experiences of those directly affected in an economy dominated by oil and natural gas production. The Permian Basin is one of the largest oil-producing regions in the United States. People who live there have benefited from explosive growth, only to see opportunities vanish with sudden industry downturns. In 2016, the National Endowment for the Humanities funded a grant for the study and collection of energy narratives in this economically volatile region. Boom or Bust derives from that community initiative and offers a unique contribution to the developing field of energy humanities. The oil-field industry may seem to be all about numbers, but as Boom or Bust demonstrates, residents of oil-and-gas country, whether they work in the oil field or not, are at the mercy of an ever-shifting economy. When the price of oil rises, companies move in and newcomers flood the area, expanding the employment force. And as the population booms, so does the infrastructure of cities. When prices drop, though, families must make difficult choices: whether to stay put or follow the oil to another location. With the ensuing declines in population, small businesses close their doors and unemployment levels rise. Despite the inevitable declines and despite the increase in alternative energy resources, many West Texans feel a sense of pride that borders on patriotism. Boom or Bust reveals the full complexity of boomtown culture.
