L'articulation temporo-mandibulaire (ATM) est une articulation soumise à un ensemble de facteurs et de contraintes lors de son développement et de sa croissance. De plus, cette articulation est très sollicitée au cours de la vie de l'individu. De très nombreux facteurs innés (facteurs hormonaux, hypoplasies, dysplasies, hyperplasies, syndromes...) et acquis (bruxisme, succion du pouce, alimentation, malocclusions, tics et parafonctions, ventilation, mastication, posture, infections, inflammation, traumatismes, stress, carences...) vont influencer le développement de la mandibule et de son condyle et ainsi perturber la croissance de cette articulation. Après avoir rappelé l'anatomie, l'embryologie et la croissance physiologique de l'ATM, cette thèse aura pour objectif de répertorier les différents éléments pouvant perturber le développement du condyle et donc l'articulation temporo-mandibulaire. Le chirurgien-dentiste pourra alors plus facilement intercepter les facteurs de risques d'un développement anormal du condyle mais également diagnostiquer une pathologie de l'ATM.
