La nostalgie pousse alors Bill Bryson a redécouvrir son enfance, notamment celle des vacances, lorsque le père emmenait la famille dans les plus fameux coins du pays... Sa mère lui prête sa vieille Chevrolet et voici notre voyageur parti pour un grand huit de plus de 20 000 kilomètres à travers les Etats-Unis. C'est ce périple qui a donné naissance à ce portrait souvent hilarant de l'Amérique profonde. Ayant traversé trente-huit Etats où, dirait-on, il a évité avec grand soin les villes d'importance, pour ne se consacrer qu'aux " bleds " les plus paumés, Bryson revient, tel un moderne Ulysse, plein d'ironie et de mordant, à son point de départ : Des Moines. Dans sa normalité immuable " sa " ville lui apparaît soudain presque belle. S'il a visité les lieux obligés, les maisons de Mark Twain, d'Elvis Presley, de Faulkner, dans le Sud, le musée Henry Ford au Nord, Bryson a aussi quelques " ratages " mémorables à son actif. Un seul exemple : le grand Canyon masqué par le brouillard. Motel Blues est désormais un " classique " du récit de voyage, mais dans la catégorie... cocasse.
