Book Description
Excerpt from Travel, Reminiscences and Experiences But it was still more attractive in the sunny spring-time, when vessels, bound for tropical coun tries, glided on the tide, or in tow of the puffing, snorting, little tugs, down the E)be. My desire to go along was then often so strong that I could hardly conquer my inclination to run away from home to see the world. These scenes, so dear to me, worked in such a way upon my mind that it became my one ambition to leave Europe as soon as possible. During the day my thoughts were wandering about in different parts of our beautiful world, and at night, in pleasant dreams I found myself amid the forest, or on the plains of South and North America. When I quitted school I was scarcely fourteen years of age, but in spite of my youth I would have left Europe at once with pleasure. In Germany no one will admit self-reliance to be a virtue in young people, and all elderly persons insist that they must be guided exactly as little children. In my family the same idea prevailed, and an aversion to causing trouble by any act of mine, determined me to submit to the wishes of my people, and to accept' the position of an apprentice to a commercial firm. Book Description
Excerpt from Old-Time Travel: Personal Reminiscences of the Continent Forty Years Ago Compared With Experiences of the Present Day Memory is responsible for these recollections, as I never kept a diary or made a note. It is my great good fortune that my friend Mr Hallam M urray had filled portfolios with his fascinating water colour drawings in going over much the same ground, and I hope the public may be as grateful for the selections from them as is the Author of the Notes. Book Description
Excerpt from Wanderings a Book of Travel and Reminiscence The basis of this book is autobiography, but the intention is not really autobiographical, and the five-and-twenty chapters, each complete in itself, into which the work has been divided have been placed purposely in seemingly haphazard order. They constitute a straightforward record of experiences in an attempt to create various atmospheres and to enunciate occasional opinions, and the few unifying ideas at the root of them can be ascertained by any reader interested in such mattes. Travel is endlessly fascinating, and I am so ardently bitten with the desire of it that I hope to have materials before long for another volume such as this, indeed, for other volumes; yet I see more and more that there is a danger of its developing into a form of intellectual mania. The craving for the new, with its vast reflex of poetic associations, builds about reality a honeycomb of obscure design wherein you may roam from one phantom chamber to another and lose yourself in false visions of the rounded globe. Romance, awaiting continually its consummation, grows exacting as the lust of power, and saps not alone the deeper imaginative gift but that particular, invaluable attitude which is called "Good Europeanism." Book Description
Excerpt from Travel Stories The Grand Canon of the Colorado River, in northern Arizona, is indeed a world wonder, and there is no other chasm in the world worthy to be compared with it. It is more than two hundred miles long, including Marble Cahon, is from ten to thirteen miles wide in the granite gorge section, and is more than a mile deep. It was created ages and ages ago by the erosive action of water, wind, and frost, and it is still being deepened and widened imperceptibly year by year. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tales of a Traveler: Reminiscences and Reflections From Twenty-Eight Years on the Road From Columbia to Lancaster is but a few miles, and there I went next. At Lancaster I succeeded in getting a few more orders, in themselves of no great account, but in the aggregate quite sufficient to encourage both my employer and his employee. I was on the road to success, I felt that hard work and persever ance would do the trick. On that trip I made Harrisburg, Lebanon, Reading, Allentown, and Easton, and returned to Philadelphia proud of my achievements. I had done my share in every town, introducing a new and unknown concern at the same time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Over Land and Sea: Reminiscences of Travel, 1844-1894 I was a very small traveller indeed when I crossed for the first time the broad Atlantic and co landed at Montreal in 1826. Passed my childhood and youth in Canada and in early manhood left for New York in order to take sailing ship, at that port, for New 3 Orleans. New York was then, as now, the commercial metropolis of the United States. It was at 3 this time, 1844, high state of prosperity, 2 rapidly stretching itself lengthwise and overflowing Brooklyn and New Jersey with its surplus population.6 Arrived in New Orleans in December, 1844. The levee was crowded with shipping, and hundreds of flatboats were moored alongside. A generous air of prosperity was over all. The cotton business successfully claimed my attention for the next two years, and in 1846 spent my vacation in Canada.
