In dem Band werden unterschiedliche Aspekte der Transformation der antiken Wissensformen jeweils am Beispiel verschiedener Wissensfelder behandelt. Die leitende Frage lautet, worin sich jeweils die Wissenschaftlichkeit des Wissens manifestiert, worin also die je eigenen Merkmale und Kriterien der Wissenschaftlichkeit unterschiedlicher Wissenschaften bestehen. Das Konzept der Transformation liefert dabei den Ausgangspunkt: Der Bezug zur Antike bildet nicht eine einseitige Rezeption eines über die Zeiten gleich bleibenden Gegenstandes, sondern stellt vielmehr eine zweistellige Relation der voneinander abhängigen Fremd- und Selbstkonstruktion dar. Wissenschaftsgeschichtlich bildeten sich einerseits die Maßstäbe der Wissenschaften vielfach über die Rezeption der antiken Wissensformen, andererseits führte umgekehrt die jeweilige Konstituierung einer Wissenschaft zu einer Transformation dieser Maßstäbe und damit auch zu einer unterschiedlichen Einschätzung der Wissenschaftlichkeit antiker Vorläufer. Weil in dem Prozess der Transformation Bedingungen erzeugt werden, die das Rezipierte selbst verändern, ergibt sich damit insgesamt ein komplexes transformationstheoretisches Verhältnis der doppelpoligen Beziehung.

The portrayal of princes plays a central role in the historical literature of the European Renaissance. The sixteen contributions collected in this volume examine such portrayals in a broad variety of historiographical, biographical, and poetic texts. It emerges clearly that historical portrayals were not essentially bound by generic constraints but instead took the form of res gestae or historiae, discrete or collective biographies, panegyric, mirrors for princes, epic poetry, orations, even commonplace books – whatever the occasion called for. Beyond questions of genre, the chapters focus on narrative strategies and the transformation of ancient, medieval, and contemporary authors, as well as on the influence of political, cultural, intellectual, and social contexts. Four broad thematic foci inform the structure of this book: the virtues ascribed to the prince, the cultural and political pretensions inscribed in literary portraits, the historical and literary models on which these portraits were based, and the method that underlay them. The volume is rounded out by a critical summary that considers the portrayal of princes in humanist historiogrpahy from the point of view of transformation theory.

Terminologies present various challenges to their inventors and to their users, ranging from epistemic adequacy over linguistic concerns to matters of strategy and group construction. With respect to historical terminologies, however, research has been dominated by linguistic approaches. Breaking new ground, Coming to Terms collects eleven articles that combine an interest in the history of knowledge, mostly ancient Greek, with research on scientific terminologies. The book is written for active learners – those keen on cutting their own path through the complex and at times hardly comprehensible world of THEORY in International Relations. To aid this process as much as possible, this book employs the didactical and methodical concept of integrating teaching and self-study. The criteria for structured learning about IR theory will be derived from an extensive discussion of the questions and problems of philosophy of science (Part 1). Theory of IR refers to the scientific study of IR and covers all of the following subtopics: the role and status of theory in the academic discipline of IR; the understanding of IR as a science and what a ""scientific"" theory is; the different assumptions upon which theory building in IR is based; the different types of theoretical constructions and models of explanations found at the heart of particular theories; and the different approaches taken on how theory and the practice of international relations are linked to each other. The criteria for the structured learning process will be applied in Part 2 of the book during the presentation of five selected theories of International Relations.
