While the general aspects Of the war appeal to the imagination of historians, one part of the world-wide field in which it is waged has a special interest for us as English men. We associate with the names of the cities and rivers of Belgium memories of older battles than those which now turn them to heaps of ashes and redden the waters. There is hardly a place in Belgium or on its borders in which the ancestors of the English soldiers fighting now have not fought in times past. The names of Nieuport, Ostend, Antwerp, Ypres, and many other places take us back to earlier triumphs or reverses. All have their niche in the pages of our military history. \vhy is it that so many of our battles have been fought in this particular plot Of ground? It seemed to me that it would be not inappro priate to consider the causes which have produced the constant repetition of the same phenomena in successive centuries, and to link the present with the past by showing why we were Originally led to fight on Belgian soil, and to make its defence the traditional Object of English policy. The International Conference on Insular Art (IIAC) is the leading forum for scholars of the visual and material culture of early medieval Ireland and Britain, including manuscript illumination, sculpture, metalwork, and textiles, and encompassing the work of Anglo-Saxon-, Celtic- and Norse-speaking artists. The present volume contains a selection of papers presented at the eighth IIAC, which took place in Glasgow 11-14 July 2017. The theme of IIAC8 - Peopling Insular Art: Practice, Performance, Perception - was intended to focus attention on those who commissioned, created, and engaged with Insular art objects, and how they conceptualised, fashioned, and experienced them (with ‘engagement’ covering not only contemporary audiences, but later medieval and modern ones too). The twenty-one articles gathered here reflect the diverse ways in which this theme has been interpreted. They demonstrate the intellectual vibrancy of Insular art studies, its international outlook, its interdiscplinarity, and its openness to innovative technologies and approaches, while at the same time demonstrating the strength and enduring value of established methodologies and research practices. This makes the Maryland Agricultural College the only College in Maryland owned by the State, and should make the people of the State feel a particular pride and obligation to see it placed in the front rank of its class. Though the ownership has changed, may those charged with the manage ment of the institution never forget the scope of the work and ideals outlined by its founders. May the Maryland Agricultural College ever have for its purpose the training of men to live in Maryland a life of usefulness and power, to gain here a liveli hood sufficient for comfortable and generous living; men with power and grace to add to community life, those elements of intelligence and virtue which give a State stability and worth; men of large obligations to the world; men who will assume large duties and carry them to successful conclusion. This means that there must be an M. A. C. Stamp as unmistakable as the inscription on the coinage of the Nation. This institution may not equal others in the number of students, or in the value of its equipment, but it need stand second to none in the earnestness, devo tion, spirit and courage which put into the college work, and into life's work after leaving college.
