Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, Vol. 16: 1889-90 Scotland for the Story of the Nation series. Much activity is displayed in periodicals and newspapers. The Highland Monthly is doing good work in all departments of Gaelic and Highland literature and the northern papers contain much Gaelic matter, including history, antiquities, and poetry. Even the People's Friend has opened its columns for Highland song, and Fionn is contributing an interesting series of articles to that periodical on the songs of the Gael. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, Vol. 14: 1887-88 Educational matters have not been going smoothly in the Highlands during the year. Some of the Lews School Boards could not meet their monetary obligations, and the Education Department has stepped in to help them. The extra money is to be furnished from the Treasury, but the Boards who consent to the arrangement must demit their powers to two of their members and the Inspector of Schools for the district. Mr Robertson has been appointed Inspector of Schools for the Isles, and he forms one of the trio that will conduct the schools. In the matter of Gaelic teaching, things are as before: no schedule of Gaelic instruction for the specific subject, only the placing of Gaelic on the list of specific subjects, the possibility of having intelligence tested in Gaelic, the possible employment of a Gaelic pupil teacher for the younger children to give instruction in that language, and a Gaelic examination paper at the Midsummer Normal Examina tions for such pupil teachers. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, Vol. 17: 1890-91 The contents of the Volume will, it. Is believed, bear com parison with our other Volumes of the past dozen years; but there are two novelties that require a few words of explanation The prize of £10 given by The Mackintosh for the best essay on the Social Condition of the Highlands since 1800, was won bv Mr Polson, Dunbeath, and it is published after the regular literary work of the Society in the present Volume. Then follows Mrs Grant's translation of William Tell into Gaelic. This appeared originally in the columns of the Northern Chronicle. The Council of the Society, moved by the excellence of the translation and by the representations of members, who offered to pay any extra cost, sanctioned its publication, and the Publishing Committee have with pleasure carried out Its behest.
