Excerpt from Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, 1879-80, Vol. 9 WE have now pleasure in presenting the Members of the Society with the Ninth Volume of Transactions. In doing so we may be permitted, as on former occasions, to make a brief reference to matters of interest to Highlanders which have occurred Since the publication of our last volume. The Society itself has been active in promoting all patriotic but non political movements in connection with the High lands. Tu especial it continues to do, as it has always done, whatever is in its power towards extending and popularising the study Of Celtic language and literature. In this it has been eminently successful. Twelve years ago, the number of High landers in the towns who hesitated to admit that they knew Gaelic - who even denied having a knowledge of it - was surprisingly large. This Species of Highlander, it is believed, is now well-nigh extinct; and his successor of the present day takes pride in stating that he can converse in the moun tain tongue. The change that has taken place in this way is highly significant, and the Society takes credit to itself for being in no small measure instrumental in bringing it about, and moulding public opinion generally in favour of questions connected with the Highlands. The Society has always endeavoured to preserve our unwritten Gaelic literature, and we would here appeal to such of our members as may possess unpublished material in connection with the Highlands and Highland people to send the same to the Secretary; and if it be considered suitable and within the scope of the Society's objects, it will be published in the Transactions. Excerpt from Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, Vol. 14: 1887-88 Educational matters have not been going smoothly in the Highlands during the year. Some of the Lews School Boards could not meet their monetary obligations, and the Education Department has stepped in to help them. The extra money is to be furnished from the Treasury, but the Boards who consent to the arrangement must demit their powers to two of their members and the Inspector of Schools for the district. Mr Robertson has been appointed Inspector of Schools for the Isles, and he forms one of the trio that will conduct the schools. In the matter of Gaelic teaching, things are as before: no schedule of Gaelic instruction for the specific subject, only the placing of Gaelic on the list of specific subjects, the possibility of having intelligence tested in Gaelic, the possible employment of a Gaelic pupil teacher for the younger children to give instruction in that language, and a Gaelic examination paper at the Midsummer Normal Examina tions for such pupil teachers.
