Excerpt from Transactions of the American Philological Association, Vol. 15: 1884 ON pedagogical as well as on other grounds the uses of the Greek genitive need to be more thoroughly understood, and more clearly presented in the elementary grammars; for no department of Greek syntax is more productive of confa sion of thought in young pupils. The grammars most in use differ greatly in their classification and in the statement of principles. Here, as elsewhere, categories based originally on mistaken notions are still retained, for the supposed comfort of the learner, after their reason for existence has long been recognized as illusory. Careful statement, with accompanying statistics, of the actual usage of the case, from Homer down, is urgently needed. It is the aim of this paper to give such a statement with reference to Sophokles. The classification employed will be different in some respects from others which have been widely adopted; and will be more or less superior to them, it is hoped, because according more closely with the historical development of the case. And, in particular, the ablatival uses of the genitive will be shown to be more numer ous, and in some directions more clearly defined, in Sophokles at least, than the grammars would lead one to suppose. Excerpt from Transactions of the American Philological Association, 1874 But these classifications are too general to satisfy the demands of most grammarians; and they easily admit of further division and subdivision. Hence the number of parts of speech was gradually increased by the Greek philosophers, particularly the Stoics, who were especially given to gram matical studies, till nine became with them, as it has usually been with modern grammarians, the accepted number. Some Roman grammarians in the time of Quintilian, as we Iearn from that judicious scholar, went on still further dividing and subdividing till they made ten, eleven, or twelve parts of speech in the Latin language, without the article which is wanting in that tongue. Quintilian himself disapproved of these later and subtle distinctions, leaving undecided however the question whether all names should be classed together, or whether they should be distinguished into substantive and adjective nouns.
