Book Description
Excerpt from The Transactions of the American Otological Society, 1868-1874, Vol. 1 In its very best position, Otology was an appendage, not always very gracefully worn, to the Department of Opthalmology; for in this country, as in Ireland, diseases of the Eye and Ear have always been connected, both in the minds of the profession and the laity. The Ophthalmological Society of the City of New York thus has for its object the cultivation of both ophthalmic and aural science. After the American Ophthalmological Society had proved itself a useful organization, and had become firmly established, the question of amending its constitution so as to admit of the discus sidn of aural subjects, was considered by the members, nearly all of whom were engaged in the practice of both Ophthalmology and Otology. It was proposed to devote one day of the annual ses sions of the Society to aural medicine and surgery; but it was finally decided that such a union could not produce satisfactory results. Consequently, on the 22d of July, 1868, the American Otological Society was organized by certain members of the American Ophthalmological Society, who were then at Newport, Rhode Island, in attendance upon the fifth meeting of the latter. Their names will be found in the minutes of the first meeting, which are printed in this volume. As will be seen by reference to the record, no scientific business was then transacted; but at each subsequent annual meeting papers have been read and discussions held. It is believed that these articles and debates have contributed essentially to the interest in aural science that now obtains in this country and abroad; and it is confidently hoped that the Otological Society has but just begun a career which is to continue so long as medical science is cultivated. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the American Otological Society, 1891-1893, Vol. 5 The President announced that invitations had been extended to a number of otologists abroad to be present at this meeting. But all had refused on account of distance, or lateness of the season, as interfering with the opening of the course of study at the different universities. The President appointed as the Business Committee Drs. John Green, J. D. Rushmore, and F. M. Wilson. On account of absence of Drs. Theobald and Risley, members of the Committee on Membership, at the time the Society was called to order, Dr. C. J. Blake and B. Alexander Randall were appointed on the committee. The Treasurer's report was read and referred to Dr. C. H. Burnett as Auditing Committee. Subsequently this committee stated that the Treasurer's accounts were cor rect and properly vouched for, and the report of the Treasurer was then accepted.
